Abstract

1,168,457. Gas diffusion catalytic compositions; separating gas mixtures by diffusion. VARTA A.G. 15 Dec., 1966 [16 Dec., 1965], No. 56248/66. Headings B1E and B1L. A composition suitable for differential gas diffusion is made by compacting a pulverulent binder and a pulverulent hydrogen-sorbing metal, obtained by leaching out, with evolution of hydrogen, a catalytically-inactive component from its alloy with the hydrogensorbing metal, and rendering the latter non- pyrophoric.- Preferred hydrogen sorbing metals are Na and Co but also specified are Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Pt or Pd. The catalytically-inactive metal may be Zw, Mg, Ba or Al. The binder may be metallic Cu, Pb, Ag or another form of Ni e.g. carbonyl Ni or non-metallic e.g. a synthetic resin. Example 1 describes the preparation of a Romey Ni- Ag composition useful for separating hydrogen and carbon dioxide from gaseous mixtures by diffusion.
