Abstract

1,176,275. Granulating metal. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORP. Aug. 14, 1968 [May 14, 1968], No.38882/68. Headings C7D and C7X. Dense apherical metal particles e.g. Cu and its alloys, Al and its alloys, Fe materials, Ti, Mg, Zn, Ni, Be, Au, Ag, Pt and solder are formed by coating the plus 100 mesh particles with a weld preventing material such as talc, lime, C, A1 2 O 3 TiO 2 , ZrO 2 , flour and heating the coated particles above the melting point of the metal in a protective atmosphere such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, dissociated ammonia, nitrogen, argon or helium. The plus 100 mesh particles of metal are made either by 1) sintering the fine metal powder or copper oxide to form a cake which is then crushed to plus 100 mesh or 2) agglomerating the fine powder with a plastic binder or 3) disintegrating a molten metal stream with water or air. The plus 100 mesh particles are preferably coated with a binder e.g. waxes, polyethylene glycol, stearates, stearic acid and gums, prior to coating with the weld preventing material. After the melting step the weld preventing material is removed by screening, washing or etching.
