Abstract

1303798 Plasma jet spraying piston rings RAMSEY CORP 15 Dec 1970 [7 Jan 1970] 59510/70 Headings C7A and C7F A piston ring is hard faced with an alloy matrix containing a W-B phase which contains 1-7% weight of interstitial B. The hard facing is formed by plasma arc spraying under oxidising conditions a powder mixture of WC and B and at least one alloying element using a plasma H 2 flow rate of 20-30 standard Cu. ft. per hour with the spray gun 3À5 - 6À5 inches from the workpiece. N 2 or A at a flow rate of 80-95 standard cubic feet per hour is used with the H 2 and the gun is traversed at 28-32 ins/min. The alloy matrix may comprise Fe Co, Ni, Cr, Al and mixtures of these and optionally Ti, Ta, Nb, V, Zr or Hf with the W-B phase forming 35-60% volume of the hard facing. The powder spray mixture preferably contains in per cent weight; 25-55 WC, 4-8 Co, 25-45 Ni, 3-7 Cr, 0À5-7 Al, 1-7 B balance Fe.
