Abstract

1,165,942. Fuel injection pumps. V.D. ROOSA. Oct.27, 1966 [Nov. 1, 1965; Dec.9, 1965], No.48286/66. Headings F1A and F1F. In a rotating distributer type fuel injection pump the feed pump 18 comprises a hub formed at one end of the distributing rotor 14 having spring-biased vanes 19 mounted in transverse slots and engaging a stator 21. A cup-shaped cap 27 encloses the feed pump and holds a tiltable end plate 36 in alignment with one end of the stator. The rotor 14 is provided with an annular groove 15 in which is mounted a two part sealing ring 53 provided with the feed pump inlet and outlet ports 16 and 17. The groove 15 communicates with the outlet port 17 to provide fuel under pressure in the groove. The cap 27 is sealed with respect to the pump housing 10 by a sealing ring 38 and the sealing ring 53 and the stator 21 are maintained in alignment with the housing by a sleeve 39. The rotor 14 is urged to the right in the housing 10 by means of a spring 61, between the drive shaft 60 and the rotor to balance the force urging it to the left produced by the feed pump 18. Fuel is supplied to the injection pump cylinder 42 from the feed pump 18 via an air separator chamber 26, a valve (32, Fig. 3, not shown), which controls the feed pump outlet pressure in accordance with speed and a metering valve 34 operated by a centrifugal governor 31. The timing of operation of the injection pump plungers 44 is adjustable in accordance with speed by means of a piston (102, Fig. 4, not shown), subject to the output pressure of the feed pump 18 and connected by a member (115) to the cam ring (50).
