Abstract

1,165,941. Fuel injection pumps. V.D. ROOSA. Oct.27, 1966 [Nov. 1, 1965; Dec.9, 1965], No.48237/66. Heading F1A. In a rotating distributer type fuel injection pump the plungers 44 are mounted in a bore 42 in the distributer 14 and actuated by a cam ring 50 which is angularly adjustable in the cylindrical housing cavity 49 by means of a piston 102 to vary the timing of injection. The cam ring is split across the bore 101 in which the end 120 of the connector 115 to the piston 102 is mounted and is deflectable outwardly during the pumping strokes of the plungers 44 to engage the surface of the cavity 49. The surface of the cavity is roughened, e.g. knurled or grooved, and the engagement between the ring 50 and the cavity provides resistance to angular movement of the ring during the plunger pumping strokes. Fuel is supplied to the distributer bore (42, Fig. 1, not shown), from a vane feed pump (18) via an air separator chamber (26), a regulating valve (32, Fig. 3, not shown), which regulates the output pressure of the feed pump in accordance with speed and a metering valve (34) operated by an adjustable centrifugal governor (31). The timing piston 102 is subject to the output pressure of the feed pump in the chamber 113 under the control of a pilot valve 105, biased by a spring 109 and the output pressure of the feed pump in piston chamber 106 in opposition to the spring 109. The spring 109 abuts a piston 125, biased by a spring 126 mounted in chamber 127 which is connected to a groove (51, Fig. 1, not shown), on the distributer (14) in the flow path of fuel from the metering valve (34) to the bore (42). The pressure in the chamber 127 will be dependent upon the position of the metering valve (34) and therefore the load on the engine and the pressure in the chamber 113 will be dependent on speed. The operation of the piston 102 will therefore control the injection pump timing in accordance with engine speed and load.
