Abstract
In a fuel injection pump of the radial cylinder/ distribution type in which the actuating cam 53 is angularly movable to vary the timing and the quantity of fuel delivered is controlled by an axially movable throttle 20 in the inlet 18 from a feed pump the pressure of which varies in accordance with the driven speed of the pump, a member 42 is located within a bore in the throttle 20 and is slidable relative thereto to control the supply of pressure fluid to a piston controlling the angular setting of the cam 53. The port 40 is supplied with liquid at a constant pressure and the pressure at port 45 varies in accordance with position of the groove 44 (or a series of graduated ports in the throttle 20) the port 45 being connected by passage 66 to one end of a valve 63 which controls a port 64 heading to one end of the control piston 61, so that that end is either connected to the output of the feed pump via passage 65 or to a drain 62 and the piston 61 takes up a position in accordance with the relative positions of the throttle 20 and member 42. The throttle 20 is axially movable in accordance with the outlet passage of the feed pump the member 42 may be fixed, or axially movable in accordance with feed pump pressure by means of the member 46.
