Abstract

1,165,870. Cracking by regenerative furnaces. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 14 Sept., 1968, No. 43847/68. Heading C5E. In an otherwise conventional process for cracking hydrocarbons to produce, for example, ethylene and/or acetylene by means of a cyclically operated regenerative furnace having 2, 3 or more regenerative masses spaced apart to form 1, 2 or more (respectively) combustion spaces into which fuel gas injection means lead, a cool purge gas (e.g. steam, H2, N 2 or CO 2 ) is injected through said injection means to cool the same at all times when fuel gas is not being injected therethrough. The nozzles of the injection means are thereby made less susceptible to thermal damage and attain longer life. The supply of purge gas is controlled by reducing pressure valves which open when the fuel gas pressure drops below a predetermined value and close when it exceeds said value. The pressure of purge gas is desirably maintained above the furnace pressure to prevent back-flow of reaction gases into the injection means which would otherwise cause coking or clogging.
