Angular adjustment of a loading cowl 40 about the axis of rotation 12 of a cutter drum 11 disposed outwards of the drive motorcontaining body 10 of a mining machine is caused by the hauling to and fro of a rope 16 passing about and secured at 28 to a boss 14 carrying a cowl-supporting arm 15 and rotatable about the axis 12. The cable 16, preferably actuated by a hydraulically powered ram 20, is, after passing about pulleys 23, 25, 26, 27 and 29 appropriately positioned in the machine, anchored at its ends at 17 to the body 10. Preferably, the cable arrangement allows of the cutter drum 11 being carried by a swingable boom mounted on the body 10.
