Abstract
1,271,020. Shearer drum cowl. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. 12 June, 1970 [2 July, 1969], No. 33348/69. Heading E1F. In a shearer drum cutter-loader mining machine having at least one cutter drum cowled by an arcuate shield secured to an arm extending from a rotatable drum-hub mounted cowl ring, a cowl repositioning means comprises a rotary drive means, a drive arrangement and a driven member secured to the cowl ring. Shield 6, Fig. 1, secured to cowl ring 4 via arm 5, is repositioned about a shearer drum (not shown) by rotary drive motor 10 via drive sprocket 11 and a driven member comprising roller chain 8 attached to and extending part way around the cowl periphery. Alternatively a conventional sprocket and chain drive (Fig. 2, not shown), or a worm and wheel drive, may be used to transmit rotary motion from the motor to the cowl ring. The motor may be pneumatically or hydraulically powered.
