Abstract

1,164,541. Apparatus for erecting open topped trays. BOWATER PACKAGING Ltd. 1 Jan., 1968 [11 Jan., 1967], No. 1607/67. Heading B5D. Apparatus for forming an open topped tray from a rectangular blank having a base portion, two side wall portions, and two end wall portions each having an extension flag at each end comprises a pair of end wall and a pair of side wall erecting cams 30, 20 defining a rectangular throat, flap folding cams 40 so arranged that the flaps are folded to lie against the inside of the side wall portions, and a reciprocating plunger 67 which forces the blank into the throat, the plunger having means at each corner adapted to assist in securing the flaps to the side wall portions. A blank is initially fed either manually or automatically to the apparatus and located by vertical members 28, 38. A switch is then operated to cause double-acting compressed air cylinders 51 to force adhesive applicators 61 into contact with the blank. Upon reaching the bottom of their stroke the compressed air supply is diverted automatically to return the applicators to their initial position. This return movement operates a further switch which diverts the air supply to a cylinder 69, the piston of which carries the plunger. As the plunger nears the bottom of its stroke another switch is operated to divert the air supply to single-acting spring-returned cylinders 88 associated with pressure plates 91 and carried by adjustable plates 83 of the plunger. The plates are pressed against the flaps for 4-5 seconds to enable the adhesive to set. During this time the pressure in the cylinders 88 builds up to a predetermined maximum value, whereupon the pressure is automatically released. The air supply is again diverted to the cylinder 69 to cause the plunger to be withdrawn. The operation is repeated, and subsequently erected trays are pushed into a shoot 5. In an alternative embodiment the plates 91 may be replaced by stapling guns, and the adhesive applicators would be unnecessary. The pairs of end and side wall erecting cams are adjustable to accommodate blanks of different sizes.
