Abstract

1,074,931. Making cartons from blanks. PEMBROKE CARTON & PRINTING CO. Ltd. Jan. 29, 1965 [Jan. 31, 1964], No. 4349/64. Heading B5D. A preferably horizontal plunger and die box forming machine with an ejection means incorporated in the die, 8, has hinged jaw members (14), Fig. 4 (not shown), with carton engaging lips (23), (24), recessed in the die walls (10), (11) and folding arms (26), Fig. 3 (not shown), in the die walls (31), (32). When the plunger (21) moves through the die, the bottom surface 20 of the partially formed carton engages the camming surface (19) on the jaws and pushes them into the recesses. At the end of the plungers stroke the lips (23), (24) engage the carton and strip it from the plunger. The fingers (26) then fold over the panels (28), Fig. 2 (not shown). The ejection means is recessed in the walls (31), (32) and comprises pivoted arms 33 on each wall. Each arm has a slidable spring- loaded member 39. This member 39 engages above the erected carton and on the next stroke of the plunger, the bottom 20 of the next carton pushes the member 39 along the slots 37 and ejects the previously erected carton. A pair of rollers 47 on the plunger engage the camming surfaces 48 on the arms 33 at the end of the plunger's stroke and push the arms 33 into the recess, where tension springs 43, Fig. 6 (not shown), urge the members 39 back to their initial positions. The compression spring 44 urges each member 39 above the next erected carton. The ejection means may be on the walls 10, 11, instead of (31), (32), especially for lidded cartons.
