Abstract
1,163,745. Electro-deposition of nickel. INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd. Aug.25, 1967 [Aug. 31, 1966], No. 38867/66. Heading C7B. Nickel is electro-deposited from an aqueous electrolyte containing one or more nickel salts using as soluble anode material carbonyl nickel pellets containing at least 0À005% by weight sulphur. The sulphur content may be as high as 0À1% but preferably is between 0À012 and 0À014%. Typically the pellets are supported in a titanium basket surrounded by a woven anode bag. The plating bath may be of the Watts type to which brightening and levelling agents are added, or may be of the sulphamate, all-chloride or all-sulphate type. The pellets are preferably produced by introducing a thermally decomposable sulphur-containing gas into the nickel carbonyl decomposer. The sulphurcontaining gas may be hydrogen sulphide but preferably is carbonyl sulphide as in Specification 1,163, 746. Sulphided pellets obtained by subjecting carbonyl nickel pellets to heating in a sulphurcontaining gas are unsatisfactory as anode material, forming large amounts of anode sludge.
