Abstract
935,854. Electroplating with gold-coloured silver. P. J. CARR. July 16, 1962, No. 43517/60. Class 41. An electrolyte used in electroplating metals to give them a gold-plated effect comprises an aqueous solution formed from plant leaves, H 3 SO 4 , a gum, sal ammoniac and AgNO 3 . An article such as a steel spoon or cigarette case may be plated. Specified conditions are carbon or steel anodes, an electrolyte temperature of 60‹ to 100‹ F., a current of 2¢ amps. at 6-12 volts with a cathode current density of 3-5 amps./sq. ft. There may be repeated reversal of polarity at intervals of 24 hours. The D.C. electrolysing current may be derived from A.C. mains. An article is firstly buffed with emery cloth, then plated, and then rinsed in Na 2 CO 3 solution and dried. It may then again be lightly buffed and the operations repeated until the required golden colour is obtained. The electrolyte may be obtained in solid form by allowing it to crystallize or by mixing with a wood filler and grinding the resultant hardened paste.
