Abstract

To reduce noise in an externally-meshing gear pump or motor, two elongate orifices 4, 5, Figs. 1, 4 in spaced symmetrical relation are provided in at least one side wall 3 of a pressure chamber enclosing the squeezing space between the teeth, with each orifice swept by the adjacent side face of a gear-wheel and with the orifice 4 associated with the driving gear-wheel 1 having its leading end in the direction of rotation of that wheel extending between the tooth root and the line of action 21, 22 into the squeezing space between the gear-wheels. Oil trapped between the gear-wheels is squeezed into the uncovered portion 41 of the orifice 4, transferred through a damping chamber 6 externally of the pressure chamber into the orifice 5 to pass through the uncovered portion 51 thereof to the high pressure side of the pump or motor.
