Abstract
1,206,402. Gear-pumps. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Nov.27, 1967 [Dec.7, 1966], No.54693/66. Heading F1F. In a gear-pump having intermeshing driver and driven gears, the tooth profiles of at least one of said gears is relieved in the portions coming into operation towards the end of the engagement as compared with the standard tooth profiles. As show, the driver gear 3 rotating in the direction of the arrow is relieved along the leading flank of each tooth from a point b at which a tooth makes initial engagement with a tooth of the driver given (see teeth 3a, 4a) to its tip. Owing to the elasticity of the gear teeth the transmission of torque from the driver gear 3 to the driven gear 4 will result in restoring contact between the two preceding teeth (3b, 4b). The consequence of this is that the root of the leading flank of a driver tooth and the tip of the trailing flank of a driven tooth receive additional wear whilst the tip of the leading flank of a driver tooth and the root of the trailing flank of a driven tooth receive less wear resulting in equalization of wear and longer tooth life. Preferably the relief of the tip portion of the teeth of the driving gear is effected on both flanks; this enables a reversible housing as described in Specification 1,052,238 to be used. This housing when reversed substitutes the engagement of the hitherto trailing flank of the driver gear and leading flank of the driven gear as the new leading and trailing flanks respectively, to double the life of the teeth. The root of the trailing flank of the driven gear may be relieved instead of the tip of the leading flank of the driver gear.
