In an electrical brake signalling system for a road vehicle having in addition to the normal brake-operated switch 12 for operating a stop lamp 13, a switch 15 operated by the vehicle hand brake for completing a circuit to the stop lamp 13, a further switch 14 is connected in series with the hand brake switch 15, the further switch 14 being closed when the engine of the vehicle is running or only when the vehicle is in motion. The switch 14 may be sensitive to oil pressure so that it is closed when the engine is running, or may be sensitive to the speed of the engine or speed of the vehicle in which case the switch 14 is closed only when the vehicle is in motion. Alternatively the switch 14 could be a relay contact controlled by the charging system. The system is suitable for diesel engined vehicles.
