An electrode comprises, adhering to a support, a sintered electron emissive layer consisting of a mixture of metallic thorium and thorium oxide together with, if desired, a minor proportion of one or more additional inorganic substances, exclusive of alkali or alkaline earth metals either in the metallic state or in the form of compounds, in which the weight ratio of metallic thorium to thorium oxide is in the range 1: 3 to 3: 1. The emissive layer may also contain small amounts of silica and/or tungsten. The electrode may be manufactured by dipping the support, which may be of tungsten containing small amounts of thorium and/or thorium oxide, into a suspension in a binder of the required proportions of thorium and thorium oxide, drying the coating and sintering by passing an arc between the coated support and another conductor in a rare gas atmosphere. Two such electrodes may be incorporated in a high-pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp, Fig. 2 (not shown), in which, in addition to mercury, the filling includes one or more of the iodides of the metals thallium, sodium, indium, gallium, lithium and the rare earths. In an example specific dimensions and operating data of the lamp are given.
