Abstract

1,160,422. Mixing flowing fluids in proportions. M. DODDS. 29 March, 1967 [29 Dec., 1965], No. 55027/65: Heading B1C. [Also in Division F1] Apparatus for mixing a proportion of secondary fluid (e.g. soluble oil) in a primary fluid (e.g. water) comprises a double acting cylinder 17 actuated by the water pressure, and coaxial metering cylinders 18, 19 the pistons 20 of which are secured one each end of the main piston 21. As piston 21 moves to the right, additive discharged from Cylinder 18 enters one side of a regulating cylinder 22 having a free piston 23, and when the regulating cylinder is full the remainder of the additive passes via a non- return valve 29 into the water supply line. Simultaneously metering cylinder 19 is exhausting the other side of the regulating cylinder and thereafter draws further additive from a reservoir 25. At the end of its stroke piston 20 opens spring-loaded poppet valves 27, 28 which respectively (a) admit pressure water to one side of a doubleacting actuating cylinder 12 which operates a change-over valve 11 for the water supply to main cylinder 17 and (b) open the other side of actuating cylinder 12 to discharge. Mixture from the main cylinder 17 and water from the actuating cylinder 12 both pass to a discharge point 9 and thence to a mixture storage tank through a ball-cock, closure of which when the tank is full arrests the apparatus. The regulating cylinder 22 has a stroke adjuster 31 by which the proportion of additive diverted into the regulating cylinder may be altered; when the free piston has full travel no additive is mixed with the primary fluid. When the secondary fluid is a lubricant it is, as shown, discharged with the primary fluid upstream of the apparatus, but if not it may be discharged at the discharge point 9. Constructional details are depicted in Figs. 1-3 (not shown).
