Abstract

The overpress. relief valve (12), operated by the press. at pump discharge (4) acting against a spring (15), also forms the seal for ports (16) in a sleeve valve (13) actuated by system pressure at entry to the engine, transmitted through a pipe (8) and acting on a piston (17) opposed by another spring (18); both valves discharge to a common return line (9). This arrangement, while maintaining the normal system characteristics, permits one valve assembly, substantially, to be used to do the work of two, and reduces the oil flow through the cooler and filter by short-circuiting oil surplus to the engine's actual requirements.
