Abstract

In a pressure exchanger wherein hot gas at high pressure supplied to a port 2V is expanded in the cells to cause compression of cold gas supplied through ports 1V and the cold compressed gas leaves through a port 2n for use, the hot high pressure gas Fig. shown and/or the compressed cold gas Fig. 3 (not shown) is branched to a port 2v<SP>1</SP> or (2n<SP>1</SP> ) in communication with cells having previously exhausted the expanded hot gas through a port 1n<SP>1</SP> and reviewed an additional charge of cold gas through a port 1v<SP>1</SP>. The arrangement thus provides a second scavenge in the low pressure zone and enables the pressures of the hot gas supplied and the compressed cold gas to be substantially equal while the expanded hot gas is of greater pressure than the cold gas supplied. Additional scavenges in the low pressure zone of the exchanger can be provided by further branches. The invention is also applicable to through-flow pressure exchangers.
