Apparatus for counting the permissible total operating hours of a heat engine, in dependence on operating conditions, comprises a thermocouple 1, an amp�re-hour counter 3 and a functiongenerator 4 interposed between a constant current source and the amp�re-hour counter 3, the generator including a rolling-sector potentiometer and being coupled to the thermocouple 1 to control the current flowing through the amperehour counter in dependence on the prevailing operating conditions. In the case of a gas turbine the generator might introduce a factor of 10 at 700�, 1 at 600� and 0�1 at 400�.
