Abstract
1,160,038. Drilling pipes. MUELLER CO. 20 Nov., 1967 [30 Nov., 1966], No. 52658/67. Heading B3C. [Also in Division F2] A pipe line stopper extension used for connecting an existing pipe line 46, Fig. 3 with a new pipe line 36 comprises a one piece body 10 with a closed-end bore 16 and an opening 32 and second bore 42 on an axis transverse to the axis of bore 16. The second bore 42 is larger than the bore 16 and opening 32 and extends past the axis of bore 16 to define a ledge 44. The body also has diametrically opposed bosses 34, 48, a counterbore 38 providing a seat 40 for pipe line 36 and internal and external threads for engagement with a closure plug (20), Fig. 4 (not shown) and a conventional drilling machine (28). The existing pipe line has the closure cap 52 welded thereto at 54 and both pipe lines 36, 46 are welded to the fitting at 56, 58. Prior to cutting the closed end of pipe line 46 the pipe line 36 is tested through the drilling machine. The latter has a shell cutter 60 and a pilot drill 62 with a known detent 64 whereby the offcut can he removed from the fitting. Pipeline 36 may be shut off by a known expansible stopper plug which abuts ledge 30. In modifications Figs. 6, 7 (not shown) the pipe lines 36, 46 are replaced by short extension pieces which are joined to the main pipe lines by compression fittings.
