Abstract

1,159,194. Load-handling pallets; packaging on pallets. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 10 April, 1968 [13 April, 1967], No. 17025/67. Headings B8C and B8H. A disposable pallet 1 of expanded polystyrene is moulded in one piece and comprises legs 4 and integral reinforcement ribs 2 which form a layer of open boxes 3 over one side only of the pallet. The boxes 3 are provided with recesses 7 on the rim of each side of each box adapted to receive a protrusion on the base of a produce box 8 to be stacked on the pallet 1. Seven layers of boxes 8 may be placed on top of the integral boxes 3 and the resulting stack covered by a cover 9 fastened by ropes 10. The pallet 1 and boxes 3 may be so designed that a box is twice as long as it is wide and with locating members on all four corners and halfway along each side. This enables layers of boxes on the pallet to be bonded after the manner of tied brickwork (not shown). Other shapes of boxes may be provided in the pallet, e.g. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates hexagonal boxes, while the boxes in the pallet need not necessarily be used for carrying goods.
