Abstract

846,542. Pallets for handling loads. NOAKES, F. R. Oct. 15, 1956 [July 14, 1955], No. 20418/55. Class 78 (4). [Also in Groups XVII and XXXII] A rectangular frame for use in constructing a pallet, box or tray includes upper and lower portions, one of which has ledges 15 (Figs. 1 and 2) and rims 12 at opposite sides while the other is engageable with the ledges and between the rims of a similar frame. The side members of the frame shown in-Fig. 2 are formed to the section shown from sheet. Four such members are secured together to form a rectangular frame which may receive a metal or wooden platform 19 to form a platform pallet. The tines of a lift truck can engage under the portions 15 of the side members from either of two directions, and several such pallets can be stacked with the portions 17, 18 of one pallet taking into the portions 14, 15, of another. Alternatively, the frame of Fig. 2 may form the upper margin of a box pallet, the lower edge of which can take within the rims 14. The body portion 20 of a box pallet may be received within the flanges 18 as shown to the right of Fig. 2 or may be secured to the outsides of the portion 17, as shown to the left of Fig. 2, which also shows in broken line an alternative section for the side members. Alternatively, the portions 14, 15 and 17 may be separately formed as shown in Fig. 4 and joined by corner posts 26 or by walls to form a box pallet. The portion 17 in Fig. 4 is shown as bent up from a sheet forming the bottom of the box. Slots may be formed in the walls of such a pallet to receive the tines of a fork truck. In further constructions a tray portion formed with the rim 14 and ledges 15 forms the upper margin of a box or tray pallet supported by runners disposed one at each side of the base of the pallet and capable of being received by the rims 14 and ledges 15 of a pallet below in a stack. The construction of Fig. 2 may carry a number of bins stretching from one side to the other of the pallet. Two frames as in Fig. 2 may be secured together to form a single pallet.
