Abstract

1,157,495. Valves. SWINNEY BROS. Ltd. 16 Aug., 1967 [15 Aug., 1966], No. 36377/66. Heading F2V. In a pressure relief valve, the closure member C is attached to an end plate A of a bellows B and is biased on to its seat by compressed air supplied at a predetermined pressure to the bellows. Depending downwardly from the plate A is a piston-rod D which carries at its free end a piston E, the piston having therein a plurality of passages J and being movable relative to the rod between a shoulder H formed on, and a nut F secured to, the rod there being a small radial clearance between the piston and its housing G. Upon the valve opening, air within the lower part of housing G forces the piston against the shoulder H so uncovering passages J and so permitting the air to pass to the upper part of the housing. Return movement of the closure member is damped and retarded by virtue of the fact that the air in the upper portion of housing G forces the piston E on to nut F, so closing passages J, and can then only return to the housing lower part via the small radial clearance, the arrangement thereby serving to prevent water hammer.
