The flow of fluid from a volume of pressure fluid, such as that within a mine roof support, is controlled by first and second valves 11, 13 operated by a piston 2 so that initially the valve 11 is opened to permit a restricted flow until the pressure falls to a predetermined value when the valve 13 is opened automatically to permit a substantially unrestricted flow, all of the flow passing across the seat of the valve 11. Fluid pressure admitted through the connection 4 raises the piston 2 and the valve 11 so that fluid can flow through the valve 13 from connection. 17 to connection 19 by way of an orifice 15. The pressure drop through the orifice holds the valve 13 closed until it has fallen to a value which can be overcome by the upward force on the piston 2. To reset the roof support, the connection 4 is vented and fluid under pressure admitted through the connection 19. In a further embodiment, the second valve consists of an inverted cup shaped member sliding within a fixed ported sleeve. The valves may also be arranged side by side with their flow paths in series and be operated by separate pistons or a common piston via a lever mechanism. Solenoids may be used in place of pistons.
