Copper or iron is plated with Ag, Bi, Cd, Cu, Mn, Hg, Mo, Ni, Au or Pb by immersing in a solution of a compound of the metal with a base, e.g. sodium hydroxide in the presence of a contact metal e.g. Al, Mg or Zn. Examples of solutions are (g./l.) (a) copper acetate 10, ammonia 88, ammonium sulphate 20, Rochelle salt 20, and caustic soda 35, and (b) nickel hydrate 6À3, ammonia 176À0, ammonium sulphate 14À0, Rochelle salt 14À0, and caustic soda 18.
