Abstract

1,155,614. Pipe laying vessels. J. RAY McDERMOTT & CO. Inc. 4 July, 1966, No. 29953/66. Headings B7A, B7M and B7V. [Also in Division F2] A pipe laying barge provided with a forwardly acting propeller 12 and laterally acting propellers 14, 16, has a side ramp 18, which may extend below the waterline, along which the pipe line 28 travels rearwardly as pipe lengths 8 are welded to the string at the bow. The barge is provided with a retractable stabilizer unit 170 having laterally directed propellers 174 each connectable through separate clutches 177 to a drive shaft 182. The clutches are actuated by switches 198 of any type which are responsive to the pressures on either side of a piston 192 in a cylinder 194, the piston being operated by a roll detecting pendulum 184, the action being to drive the appropriate propeller to develop a thrust opposing a particular roll movement.
