Abstract

1,112,813. Jet propelled hydrofoil craft. L. W. JOHNSON. 17 Jan., 1967 [17 Jan., 1966], No. 2352/67. Headings B7A and B7V. A craft comprising a hull 12 and a plurality of hydrofoils 14, 16 extending laterally below the bottom of the hull has a substantially planar ski-like member 18, 20 extending between each hydrofoil 14 and 16 and the hull whereby, when the speed of the craft increases, the craft first rides on the hull and ski-like members and as speed further increases the craft will ride on the hydrofoils. Each hydrofoil 14 and 16 is pivoted to its ski-like member 18, 20 which is pivoted in the hull at its front end. The skilike member and hydrofoil are lowered from a retracted position in the hull by a piston rod 25 of an hydraulic cylinder 37 under the control of an apparatus 43 actuated by a height or pressure sensors 42 and velocity sensors 45. The hydraulic cylinders 37 may be utilized as jacks for dry docking repair operations. The craft is propelled by water drawn in at a port 28 being ejected via a pump 26 to exhaust port 21.
