Abstract

A heat exchanger comprises an external pipe 5 reinforced with an inner, slit pipe 11 and a concentric and radially-spaced inner pipe 1 through which a hotter medium is conveyed to a mixing chamber 3 to which the cooler medium is admitted from an inlet 2 in the pipe 5. The mixture passes to an outlet 4 in countercurrent flow to the hotter medium over the outer surface of the pipe 1 which forms a thermally conductive wall. The wall is formed by at least two concentric pipes, each of which having a slit to absorb thermal expansion which may be longitudinal or helical and so positioned as to be out of register with each other. A coil spring 10 retains the sleeve 11 in the region of the outlet zone 9 of the mixing chamber 3 to protect the external pipe 5 from localized thermal shocks from the mixing process.
