A copper fin 1 for brazing to the pipes of a heat exchanger, e.g. for a gas-fired water heater, has two opposed edges 2, 3 with cut-away portions 5 to prevent local overheating, so that the opposed edges have parallel contours, the pipe apertures 4 being in at least two layers, one above the other. The pipes in one layer may be arranged to lie opposite the spaces between the pipes of an adjacent layer or all the pipes may be arranged to lie opposite spaces between the pipes of all other layers. There may be two layers of fins, one layer directly above the other. The combustion gases flow upwards around the horizontal water pipes.
