Abstract
115,514. Brearley, H., and Ayres, W. H. May 26, 1917. Addition to 104,268. Shafts.-In forging multiple crank-shafts for aeroplane or other internal-combustion engines, the method described in the parent Specification is modified by forging the crank-webs from the arms while in the embryo form produced by the dies 1, 2, Fig. 1. For this purpose, dies 3, 4 act in turn on the arms, flattening those parts not required for the crankwebs. In a multiple-of-three cylinder crankshaft, preferably only the two arms having separated webs are forged at this stage and the third web in forged to leave a central double web by the dies 5 - - 8 as shown in the parent Specification. In either case, the ends of the shaft are forged as before.
