Shearing. - In a crank-actuated shearing- machine, Fig. 1, the upper lever b is actuated through links g by a crank, is coupled to the upper shear-block at its centre, and at the other end is jointed to bars f, which are jointed at their lower ends to a lever h pivoted to the framing at i and coupled to the lower shear-block by links l. As the lever b is forced downwards it swings about the pivot e until the upper shear-blade rests on the work. It then swings about the pivot d to draw the lower blade up into contact with the work, which is then sheared. The pivot i of the lower lever is tied by links o to the crank-shaft. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the links f coupling the two levers are between the links g coupling the upper lever to the crank and the upper shear-block, and between the pivot i of the lower lever and the links l coupling it to the lower shear-block.
