Piles, driving.-Impact apparatus for pilo driving &c. and particularly apparatus in which the impact member is supported by a rope &c., is operated by a uniformly-moving member, such as a crank, in such a manner that the rate of change of velocity of the impact member when the latter is near the top of its stroke is smaller than would be due to simple harmonic motion. whereby the crank &c. may be driven at higher speed without the rope &c. becoming slack. In Fig. 1, a rope passes from the impact member over pulleys and is connected at X to a pivoted lever E connected by a link D to a disc C which is oscillated by a crank A and connecting.rod B; the point of connection 4 between the link D and disc C oscillates between the points 1 and 5. In Fig. 2, a crank A acts through connecting rod B and toggle links M, L to rock a lever F to which the rope is connected at Y, the toggle links being aligned when the impact element is in its highest position. A cam designed to give the desired velocity curve may act directly to reciprocate the impact member.
