Appligatlon filed March 22, 1923. Serial No. 826,849.
To all whom it may con'ae m:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvn R. THOMP- son, a citizen of the United, States of America, residing in the borough of Richmond, city and State of New York have invented certain new and useful improvements in Drawing Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drawing presses and aims to provide improvements therein.
The invention provides a drawing press 0 simple and compact construction, of the type in which the means for driving, the punch slide and blank-holder or die slide distributes the force symmetrically to said slides, in a manner especially suitable for presses having a considerable span, or distance between uprights. The invention further provides a press in which the overall height and longitudinal and transverse width of the press may be of minimum dimensions for a given stroke and width between uprights, or span. It further provides a press in which the working parts of the blankholder or die slide driving mechanism are substantially confined to the middle portion of the upper part of the press frame.
An embodiment of the inventionis illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- V Figure l is a front view of a press, with parts broken away to more clearly show the construction.
Fig. 2 is a top plan vlew, and Fig. 3 is a view partly in vertical section and partly-in side elevation. Y Referring to said drawings, numeral 10 designates the press frame, having uprights 11, 12 spaced widely apart, a bed .13, and a crown 14, the crown and bed being tied together, as usual, by tie rods 15, at each side of the press. Between the side frames 11', 12 is a slide 20 adapted to carry a blank-holder or die, the bed 13 'being adapted to carry a complementary tool between whlch tools on the bed-.13 and slide 20 a sheet metal blank is adapted to be gripped. 4 I
A second slide 25 guided in the slide 20, as indicated at 26 and adapted to carry a punch, is rovided. 'The punch slide 25 is convenient y driven by pitmen rods 27, 28 symmetrically connected to said slide, and to cranks 30, 31 on a crank-shaft 33 extend ng lengthwise of the press, and having driving wheels or gears 34,:35, at the ends thereof, which are driven w1th equal force by pinions 37, 38, on a fast movin back-shaft 39.
Means are provided or drivin the blank- I well in its 0 holder or die slide 20 with a movement, as usual in this type of press. These means comprise an actuating part 41 on the crown 14 between the uprights, and separate connections 43, 44 from said actuating part 41 on each side of a plane intersecting the axis of said crank-shaft 33, to
said blank-holder-slide 41. The actuating part 41 is conveniently in the form of a slide midway of the crown 14, and working in guides 46 in said crown, and the separate connections 43, 44 are preferably in the form of two or morerocking parts48, 48', 49,49, connected by llnks 51, 51' to said slide 41,
by links 53,53 to one another, and by links parts 55, 55' to said slide 20. The rockin 48, 48' are preferably in the form 0 rockshafts 57 having single arms 58, 59 thereon and turning in a hollow portion 60 of the crown 14, a sin le link 51, 51' connecting each arm 58 to t e actuating slide 41. The
rocking parts 49, 49' are'also preferably in the form of rock-shafts 63 each having one intermediate arm 64, and two extreme arms 65, 66 thereon, the intermediate arms 64being in the hollow portion 60 of thecrown, v
and connected to the arm 59, by single links 53, 53, and the extreme arms 65, 66 are preferably located at the outer sides of the crown 14, and each arm 65, 66 and a link 55, 55' constituting a toggle 70. The arms no 59 and each of the links 53, 53' may also if desired be made so as to constitute toggles.
At the time the parts of the toggle 70 are in substantial alinement the links 51, 51' are moving through an are which is substantially perpendicular to the axes of said links, thereby imp'arting a minimum of movement to said links and the rocking parts 48, 48 connectedthereto, and the dwell of 90 and over usual in this t joint action 0 the toggles and links, as just explained.
The actuating slide 41 is convenientl connected to a crank 75 on the crank-sha 33 by means of a link or .connectin rod 77,
and the crank 75 is given the usua lead-of 45 over the cranks 30, 31 (figured from the dead-center line of said cranks 30', 31
whereby the dwell of the blank-holder,s1i e 20 is timed so as to occur while the cranks e of press is due tothe con- 10! second-named rockin v 30, 31 connected to the punch slide 25 are moving through 90 preceding the limit of throw of the said cranks (i. e., the working part of the working stroke).
5 The axes of the rocking parts 49, 49',
48, 48' may lie in substantially the same horizontal plane, and all parts of the conshaft, a blank-holder or dieslide, and
' means for operating said blank-holder or die slide, said means comprising rocking parts at each side of the press turning on axes transverse of said crank-shaft, toggles between said rocking parts and said blankholder slide, a second rocking part nearer the middle of-the press turning on an axis parallel with those of said first-named rocking parts, connections between said first and parts for transmitting movement from t e latter to the former,
A v and means connected to an intermediate part of said crank-shaft for-rocking said second rocking part.
