J. F. MURRAY STRAW PRESS Filed April 9', 1926 WITNEiS v ATTO R N EY Patented June 7, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
JOHN F. MURRAY, OF OTTERBEIN, INDIANA, ASSIGNOROF ONE-HALF TO WALTER IRVIN, 0F OTTERBEIN, INDIANA. v
STRAW PRESS.
Application filed April 9, 1926. Serial No. 100,948.
This invention relates to a straw press, the general object of the invention being to provide means for applying pressure to one end of the press to contract the same so that the press can be quickly changed to suit the different kinds of material for which it is being used. a
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein the figure shows a perspective view of a pressing chamber constructed in accordance with my invention.
As shown in this View, I arrange four channel beams 1, 2, 8 and I at the end of the press, two of the beams being arranged at the sides and the other two at the top and bottom. A presser plate 5 is connected with each side beam and a bridge piece 6 is placed on the top beam. Each end of each of the top and bottom beams is connected by a pair of links 7 with the adjacent end of a side beam and eye bolts 8 have their eyes engaging a bolt 9 arranged at the center of the bottom beam 1, with the threaded ends passing through the side beams where they receive the nuts 10. This permits the side beams to be adjusted in relation to the bottom beam.
A lever 11 is pivoted to the bridge piece 6, as shown at 12, and a rod 13 connects the end of said lever with the upper end of the side beam 3 and a similar rod 16 connects the lever to the upper end of the side beam 4, the inner ends of the rods 15 and 16 being connected with the lever at opposite sides of the pivot 12. The usual means are provided for holding the lever in adjusted position, such means being shown generally at 17.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that when the end of the pressing chamber is to be contracted, it is simply necessary to move the lever 11 so as to cause the beams 3 and 4 to move toward each other, which action will cause the beams 1 and 2 to move to-' In a pressing chamber of a baling ma chine, channel beams at the sides, top and bottom of said chamber at one end thereof, links pivotally connecting the ends of said beams together, presser plates carried by the side beams, a bridge piece carried by the top beam, means adjustably connecting the lower ends of the side beams for moving the ends thereof toward and away from each other, an operating lever pivoted at one end to the bridge piece, connecting rods having their outer ends adjustably connected to the upper ends of the side beams and their inner ends connected to the lever at opposite sides of the pivot point whereby lateral movement of said lever will move the upper ends of said side beams toward and away from each other and means for holding said lever in adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof I affii: my signature.
JOHN F. MURRAY.
