E. HALL COVE-L, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. Letters Patent in. 70,808, dated November 12, 1867.
IMPROVED CLOTHESWRINGER.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, E. HALL OovEL, of the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and improved Olothes-Wringer and Mangle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and marks thereon.
This invention relates to a new and improved method of constructing clothes-wringcrs, whereby they are not only greatly simplified in their construction, but are so arranged that cylinders or rollers for mangling can readily be substituted for the wringing-rollers and the invention consists in the manner in which the pressure is imparted to the rollers, or in the double pressing levers, and the manner of their construction and application, and also in the method of attachingthe wringer to the tub, and in the general construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described. The drawings forming part of the specification show a wringer constructed under my invention, in which- Figure 1 represents a front or side elevation of the machine.
Figure 2 is an end elevation.
Figure 3 is a view in detail, showing the end and joilrnal of one of the rollers, with a section of one of the levels and the form of thebox, the whole being on an enlarged scale. I
Figure 5 is a detached sectional view of the box on the ends of the levers, forming a part or end of the levers, the section being through the line a: x of fig. 3.
In all the figures similar letters refer to corresponding parts.
A indicates the standards, which are double slotted, as seen in the drawing, for the admission of the journals of the rollers and boxes on the levers. Bis the upper roller, and with simple journals at each end. C is the lower roller, with journals at the ends, one of which journals extends through the standard, upon the end of which there is a crank, D, by which the machine is operated. The. lower ends of the standards A are made in the form of a vise; with a jaw, E, and screw and nut F, as seen in fig. 2, for clamping .the machine to the tub.
G indicates the screw and nut; H H the levers, which are connected together by pivot-joints at J J, which joints form the fulcrum of the levers. 4 The boxes are cast or formed on the ends of the levers, making in fact a part thereof, and being applied to the journals on their upper and lower sides respectively, as seen in fig. 2.
- It will be understood that pressure imparted by the spiral spring K, will force the opposite ends of the lever toward each other, and consequently press the rollers together with a force proportioned to the length of' the levers, or the purchase obtained thereby. K is the spiral spring around the screw G, the tension and force of which are exerted between the levers. The cloth passing between the rollers is indicated by red lines. LL indicate caps on the top of the standards A A, to support the slotted ends. The levers H H may be made sufficiently elastic to afford relief to the rollers when required, or, in other words, to act as springs on the rollers if desired. By imparting the pressure on the rollers by levers and a single spring or springs, at one point in this form of levers, the pressure must be equal on the ends, thus obviating one serious objection to the ordinary wringer and mangle, but unequal pressure on the ends of the rollers is provided for in the peculiar form of the. box N, the bearing being conical, as seen in fig. 5, thus allowing the journal to rock or tilt in the box without disturbing the levers or altering their action.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. The double slotted standards A A, in combination with the conical box N and levers H H, substantially as and for the purposes herein recited.
2. The double bail or semicircular levers H H, jointed together, and forming thereby a fulcrum for each other, with the boxes N attached thereto or cast thereon, and having the springs and adjustable nut on the ends, as and for the purposes described.
This specification signed this 26th day of October, 1867."-
E. HALL OOVEL.
