To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNST GESSNER, of Aue, Saxony, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cloth-Pressing Machines, of which the following is a specification. 1
This improvement has reference to my invention in cloth pressing machinery for which reissued Letters Patent were granted to me dated February 17, 1880, Nos. 9,076 and 9,077. i
In the machine shown in Figure 1 of Paten't No. 9,076 the cloth is pressed between a revolving cylinder and two bed plates which are mounted upon vertical arms oppositely arranged on both sides of the cylinder, and connected one with another by a spring provided with screw threads and nuts upon its outer ends, for the purpose of moving the bed plates to or from the cylinder to exert or relieve pressure. The method of operating the said vertical lever arms for the purpose of moving the bed plates to or from the cylinder, by means of screws is diflicult and slow.
My present invention has for its object to provide means for moving the bed plates to or from the cylinder almost instantaneously, the main feature of the invention consisting of a toggle of peculiar construction whereby the two vertical lever arms oppositely arranged are connected one with another, the said toggle being operated by a winch handle or hand lever.
In the accompanying drawings-Fig. 1 shows the side view of a pressing machine with two vertical lever arms and the arrangement for operating the same. Fig. 2 shows a modification of the same in combination with a third bed plate arranged below the cylinder. 7
Fig. 1 shows the bed plates B B in the position away from the cylinder, the toggle consisting of a link E and connecting rodF being opened. The link E is a short one, while rod F extends across the top of the machine. It is to be understood that there is a toggle at both ends of the machine, the link E of each toggle being rigidly secured to the end of a rock bar H extending from end to end of the machine and fittingloosely through the upper part of the lever arms 0 so that by turning said bar the two toggles are operated'simultane ously. The connecting rod F, at both ends of the machine, is pivoted to the angle of an elbow lever 9 whose lower and vertical arm is pivoted to the top of vertical lever arm 0' and whose outwardly projecting horizontal arm is jointed to a rod F which, in turn at its lower end, is jointed to a horizontal lever J fulcrumed to an offset N of the main frame and projecting through the machine to the opposite side where it is provided with a weight J. This weight J is made in sections and serves to adjust the pressure between the bed plates and cylinder A. To remedy the pressure elastical the connecting rod F may be formed with a loop spring as shown in dotted lines. At one end of the machine a segmental rack S is rigidly fixed to the link E, and this rack is in gear with a pinion 1" connected with v a winch handle G, so that by turning said.
winch handle the toggle joints are operated. In order to insure that the vertical lever arms 0 C be held in position while the bed plates are moved from the cylinder, arms MM projecting from the middle frame N are provided and supplied with set screws k k to bear against the lever arms.
Fig. 2 shows the toggle straightened or closed to the locking point to exert pressure. A link E is rigidly secured to both ends of the rock bar H and said link is made at one end of the machine as an elbow of a hand lever G. The connecting rod F is at one end pivoted direct to the top end of the vertical lever arms 0, and at the other end is pivoted to the outer end of the link E or the elbow of lever G. An anchorage rod 9 serves for connecting the link E with the middle frame N. This bar g is pivoted to the link on the opposite side of the rock bar H from the joint of rod F, so that by turning the link E by means of the hand lever G the two vertical lever arms 0 C are caused to be moved away from the cylinder simultaneously and at equal distances. Pressure is exerted upon the cylinder by a weighted lever J acting in connection with the vertical arm 0. Beside the two bed plat-es B B a third bed plate B might be employed below the cylinder, being forced upward against the cylinder by means of a weighted lever J as indicated by dotted lines.
In both Figs. 1 and 2 the link E forms one member of the toggle and the rod F the other, and the rod is bent downwardly whereit connects with the link so that this joint will drop below the rock bar H, when the press boxes are closed upon the cylinder, and lock them in this position. If desired the construction shown in Fig. 1 may be provided with the anchorage bar gin place of the stop screws 70 7c.
Iwould have it understood that the means for turning the link E or bar H may vary from those shown in the drawings without in any way altering the principle of my invention.
I am aware that vertical lever arms carrying press plates upon the opposite side of a cylinder have been operated by toggle arms of equal length arranged at the lower ends of the lever, arms below the cylinder, which toggle applied the pressure by a straightening movement, and an endwise thrust.
My invention is distinctive in the following particulars; first, the location of the toggle above the cylinder; second, the fact that the toggle arms are of unequal length, one of them being a tension rod extending all the way across the machine from lever arm to lever arm; thirdly, the fact that the pressing strain is a pull or one of tension and not one of endwise thrust. The advantages are that the space below the'cylinder is free and unobstructed, the toggle operating mechanism being" all on one side and easily accessible, and a locking action of the toggle may be had by the movement of one joint past another. The tension strain of the long member of the toggle also allows this toggle arm to be made much lighter, as there is no danger of springing or bending as in a thrust strain, thus making' a much simpler and cheaper and more efiective mechanism for the purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is g 1. The combination with a pressing cylinder, the two bed plates, and vertical lever arms carrying the same; of a toggle for connecting the upper ends of the lever arms, the one member of said toggle being made long and extending across the top of the machine for a tension strain, and the other member being made short and provided with means for flexing or bending the-joint substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with a pressing cylininder, the two bed plates and vertical lever arms carrying the same; of a toggle composed of a tension connecting rod pivotally attached to one lever arm at one side, and extending entirely over the top of the cylinder and a link pivotally attached to the other lever arm at the opposite side; a rock bar connected to the links of the toggle, andmeans for turning said link fixed at the end of said bar, whereby the bed plates are caused to be moved to or from the cylinder, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a pressing cylinder, the two bed plates, and vertical lever arms carrying the same; of a toggle for connecting the upper ends of the lever arms, the one memberof said toggle being madelong and extending across the top of the machine, and the other member being made short and arranged upon the one sideof the machine, and the end of the long member being bent down where it connects with the short member to pass behind the pivotal axis of the short member and lock the toggle joint closed substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination of a pressing cylinder, two bed plates, vertical lever ar'ms carrying the same; a toggle extending across the top of the machine andcomposed of a connecting rod pivotally attached to one lever arm, and a link pivotally attached to the other lever arm, and means for limiting and regulating the outward movement of the lever arms, substantially as described.
