To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, CLARENDON NIGKERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drop- Hammers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in drop hammers, and its object, among other things, is to so design and construct the several parts that the lifter dog and bell crank of the lifter mechanism will have a positive and inseparable connection, one with the other.
To these, and other ends, my invention consists in the drop hammer, having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed outin the claims.
In the drawings, to which reference is made, and wherein like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures; Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a portion of a drop hammer with my improvements connected therewith; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the lifter mechanism; and Fig. 4 is a plan view thereof, partly in section,
The reference numeral 1 designates the base, 2 and 3 the uprights or side frames, l the hammer or ram that moves between the uprights, 5 the hammer board, and 6 the lifter rod, all being constructed and operated in a well known manner.
The lifter mechanism in more or less common use is not applicable to all classes of hammers, because the connection between the lifter dog and bell crank is not inseparable, and owing to the impracticability of insuring a proper adjustment of the lifter dog in relation to the said bell crank, and by reason of an unusual shock or jar, or for other reasons, they become jammed in relation to each other, resulting in either injury to the operator, the work, or the machine itself. I have avoided the above, and other objections thereto, by making an inseparable connection between the lifter dog and oscillating parts, thereby eliminating any pos- V sibility of the parts becoming jammed.
In the embodiment of my invention I provide a bracket 7 that is adjustably secured within the slot 8 in the upright 2 by the T headed bolts 9, and within which is a bolt 10, having a bell crank 11 rotatably mounted thereon. A stud 12, integral with the bell crank 11,-or made separately, if desired; projects laterally from one side of said bell crank and a roll 13 is rotatably mounted therein. Said roll lies in the path of a cam 141 upon one edge of the hammer a. The lifter dog 15 is adj ustably secured to the lifter rod 6 by the key 16, and the bolts 17 and 18, which pass through the lugs 19. A link 20, pivotally secured at each end, connects the bell crank 11 with the lifter dog 15.
With my improved lifter mechanism, as above described, wherein the connection between the lifter dog and bell crank is inseparable, through the link pivoted at both ends, the parts are always in their proper relative positions and cannot become jammed or clogged, whatever the extent of the shock or jar that might be transmitted thereto, and for these and other reasons, the hammer is always under control and will never fall to injure the operator, the work, or the machine.
Within the scope of the appended claims minor changes and alterations may be made within my invention, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fair within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a drop hammer, the combination with a base; of uprights connected with said base; a hammer movable between said uprights having a cam thereon; a lifter rod; a dog thereon; a bracket adjustably secured upon one of said uprights; a bell crank pivotally secured to said bracket having a part thereon in the path of said cam; and a link connecting said bell crank with said dog and pivotally secured at each end.
2.
