U DDDDD DUDI'JDDDB DD v siding at Cleveland, in the county of Cuya-i 'noga and State of Ohio, have invented a.
MICHAEL E. MGINTYRE, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOB, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,
TO'THE STANDARD PARTS COMPANY. OEQLEVELAND, OHIO,
OHIO.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, MICHAEL M. Mo- INTYRE, a citizen of the United States, re-
certain new and useful Improvement in :gPlate-Ben'ding Machines, of which the folowin is a full, clear, and exact descrip-- tion, reference being had to the accompanyin drawings.
machines and more particularly to machines employed for bending or cambering sprmg leaves. vention to provide a machine of this kind which, while extremely simple in construction, may be easily and conveniently adjusted to accommodate and produce'varlous curvatures in the spring leaves; A further object of'the invention is to produce a machine of this type which is convenlent and simple of operation." Further and more limited objects of the invention will appear hereinafter. Generally speaking, my invention may be defined as consisting of. thecombinations of elements set forth in the claims hereto annexed and illustrated in the I drawings formingpart hereof, wherelnz' Figure 1 represents a front elevation and Fig. 2 a central sectional viewtaken through a machine constructed in accordance with my invention showing the parts in the position which they occupy when separated for the purpose of-insert1ng or removing the leaves; and Figs. 3' and 4 are views, similar to Figs. land 2, respectively, showing the parts'in closed or cambering position.
Describing, by reference characters the variousparts illustrated herein, 1 denotes a pair of longitudinal sills and 2 one of the .cross sills of a frame supporting the mechanism. Atthe end of the frame opposite the cross sill 2 there is provided a cembined cross sill and bed plate 3, the last mentioned sill being conveniently cast with the sills 1, to form a rigid construction. 'In addition to the-lon itudinal side'sills 1, a'sufficient number 0 intermediate sills will 'be provided, three such intermediate sills being illustrated, the central sill being indicated at 4 and the sills on each side of the central sill being indicated at 4".
For convenience of description, it. will be assumed that the frame is supported in a vertical position and that the bedplate 3 1s PLATE-BENDING MACHI E. Specification of Letters Patent. Application filcdvAugust 4, 1913. Serial No. 782,821.
' his invention relates to spring-making,
It is the general object of the inany convenient adjusted position.
at the lower "end of the frame.
1 plate is generally convex in outline, the convex upper surface being' formed by aseries of stepped surfaces 3. The bed plate is 1B0 --ing a wide rib surrounding the same, andpreferably a casting comprising a-web hav thenpper. portion of this rib, is providedwith the steps referred to. A series of templet-sections 5 are provided. with stems 6 which extend through the position. These templet sections Fconstitiite plate-engaging members, are preferab1y rounded on. top, as shown, and are of sucheach other from side-to side or the hame.
This cross head isprovided in its ----lower screws ll being providedfo hold thesein;
I The upper end of the :cross'head 8 is pro-' of links 14, said'links being secured toithe" ends of the links 14 are connected by a cross bar 16-, which extends through a lever 17 beyond the cr0ss-sill'2 to provide a suppbrt .for said lever. The lever 17 extends beyond its point of connection with the links 14 and is there provided with an operating handle 19; t
scribed, it is believed that the operation will be clear. The templet sections 5 and are adjusted to the curvature which is desired for any particular run of plates. The lever handle is moved upwardly, as shown in Figs.
' On'moving the lever handle downwardly,- the links 14 and 17 operate as a toggle joint,
forcing the cross head 8 toward the bed plate in the manner shown5inFig's. 3 an A conronn'rron or 66'. stepped rib, set screws 7 bei i eg for holding these. sectionsin any adj te 70. width astoibe in substantial}contactwith the templetbed plate '3 is a cross head 8,: surface with a rib-9 which iscurved; and stepped. complementarily to the stepped rib .on the bed plate andin which rib there are adgustably-mounted templet sections 10, set.
. vided with a shaft 12 journaled in bearings I 513 and to which there is connected a pair.
:35 shaft by meansof set screws 15. Theupjper' I With the construction as shown and de plate and. bending andclamping the spring 4. The parts are so arranged that, when the spring-plate between the. cambering forms or heads is thus clamped, the links 14 and the part of the lever 17 which extends from the shaft 16 to the lugs 18;willhave produced a machine which is particularly simple of construction and which is capable of a convenient and wide range of adjustment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a machine of the character set forth, the combination of a pair of cambering heads, and means for moving one of said heads toward and from the other, the said means comprising a lever pivoted at one end and at one side of one of said heads and a toggle link connected to said lever and to the last-mentioned head, the parts being so arranged that the toggle link and the portion of the lever extending therefrom to the pivot or fulcrum will form a straight line when the heads are in engagement with an interposed plate thereby to lock the heads in clamping position.
2. In a machine of thecharacter described, the combination, with a fixed cambering head anda cambering head movable toward and from the first mentioned head, of a pair of toggle links rotatably connected each at one end to the movable head, 'a lever pivoted at one end at one side of the movable head and beyond the adjacent ends of said links, and means pivotally connecting such last mentioned ends of said links to said head, the parts being so arranged that the part of the lever extending from the point of connection with the links to the fulcrum or pivot provides with the said links a toggle, the links whereof are in the same straight line when the two heads are in operative relation to the interposed plate thereby to lock the plate during the camberlng operation.
3. In a machine of the character described, the combination, with a form having a cambering head rigid therewith and provided with longitudinal sills extending from said head and with a central intermediate sill extending beyond the first mentioned sills, of a cambering head slidably mounted upon the first two sills, a link pivotally connected to the last mentioned head, and a lever connected at one end to the intermediate sill andat an intermediate portion to said link, the parts being so arranged that, when the movable head is in engagement with a plate interposed between the same and the fixed head, said link and the portion of the lever extending between said link and the pivot or fulcrum will form a straight line thereby to lock the heads in cambering position. I
'4. In a machine of the character described, the combination, with a form comprising a fixed cambering head, a pair of longitudinal sills extending therefrom,
cross-sills connecting the ends of the longitudinal sills which are opposite said head and a central intermediate sill extending from said head beyond said cross-sill, of a movable camberin head slidably mounted upon the longitudinal sills, a lever pivoted at one end to the portion of the central sill which extends beyond the cross-sill, and a link pivotally connected to the movable head and to said lever intermediate'of the ends thereof, the parts being so proportioned that the said linkand the ortion of the lever extending therefrom to the fulcrum or pivot
