Be ithnown that we, LnLaND 1vViLLlis and OLi'N F. VVooDwon'rii, citizens of the United States, residing in Grenloch, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is aspecication. Our invention relates to that type `of cultivator in which the cultivator blades are mounted upon a frame comprising a center `bar and opposite side bars, and our inven- "tion, relates particularly to the construction 'of the slide for effecting the spreading apart or the "drawing together `of the sidebars ofthe frame, theobject of our `invention being to, simplify and cheapeii such construction as compared with the malleable iron construction heretofore used.

ln Fig. l of the drawing, 1 represents the central longitudinal bar and 2-2 the opposite side bars of a cultivator frame of the type to which our invention relates, these bars, in the complete machine, having cultivator blades mounted thereon in the usual manner. The side bars 2 are, at their front ends, pivoted to a head 3 on the central bar l, and said side bars are also provided with wings 4 which are connected by links 5 to a slide 7, the latter being mounted so as to be free to slide forwardly and baclwardly on the central bar l of the frame and having such movement imparted to it by a lever S pivoted to said central bar l and connect ed to the slide 7 by means of a link 9, as

Heretofore in machines of this type the slide 7 has `been composed of a malleable iron castingp but such `construction is expensive, and it .is the objectof our invention to provide a cheaper but acceptable substitute therefor. l
@n reference to Figs. 2, 3 and 4 ofthe drawing it will be noted that the slide 7 is composed of upper and lower members and 24, shown, respectively, in Figs. 3 and 4, the member 23 being formed from the blank shown in Figb, and the member 24 from the blank shown in Fig. 6. The blank shown "in Fig. 5 is a platehaving a 25, opposite inem-bers 2G at with opposite parallel end members 28, projecting Side members 29,and aeentral member `30, the latter being centrally connected to the end members 28 at 3l but being separated from said end members and from the side members 29 by incisions 32.
ln producing the slide member 23 from the blank shown in 5 the central portions of the end members 26 of the latter are bent upwardly above the plane of the side members 27 as shown at 33 in Fig. 3. and'in producing the slide member 24 from the blank shown in Fig. 6 the end members 2 8 of the latter are bent upwardly on the lines g/wy, Fig. 6, carrying with them the side members 29 and freeing the side poru tions of the member 30 so as to form a memn ber 35 (Fig. 4) of lll-shaped crosssection with central opening 36 in each side and horizontally projecting wings 37 at the bottom in line with said openings 36, these wings having in them openings 38 which, when the member 23 is slipped over the top of the member 24, will axially coincide with corresponding openings 39 formed in the side wings 27 of said top member, each pair of openings 38 and 39 receiving a bolt 40 whereby the top and bottom members of the slide are held in proper engagement with the eentral bar 1 of the frame, said bolts 40 also serving as pivots for the inner ends of the links 5 whereby the slide 7 is connected to the wings 4 on the side frames 2 of the cultivator.
i The side portions of the lower member of the slide and the upwardly bent portions 33 of the top member thereof serve to provide side bearings for said slide on the bar 1 and thus prevent lateral movement of said yslide in respect to said bar. When the ends 28 of the blank shown in Fig. 6 are bent upwardly as shown at 35'in F ig` 4 the side members 29 of said blank form upwardly projecting wings 4l (Fig. 4) with openings 42 for the reception of the pivot pin 43 for the lower end of the link 9, whereby the slide is connected to the operating lever 8, as shown in Fig. 2.
The production of the slide 7 from sheets or plates of metal by punching and bending in the manner described materially cheapens these parts as compared with the cost of the malleable iron casting formerly employed, and the noveleonstruction is vquite as edective for the intended purpose and is as strong as, orl stronger than, the corresponding part as formerly made.
We therefore claim:
1. The within described slide for spreading and contracting the side bars of a culti- 'vator frame, said slide consisting of upper -and lower members, one embracing the upperand the other the lower portion of the central bar of the cultivator frame, and means for vconfining said upper and lower members in such engaging relation, said upper member consisting of a plate with central opening, laterally projecting side members and end members having portions bent into a plane above that of the side members.
2. The within described slide for spreading and contracting the side bars of a cultivator frame, said slide consisting of upper and lower members, one embracing the upper and the other the lower portion of the central bar of a cultivator iframe, and means for confining said upper and lower members in such engaging relation, said lower member consisting of a plate having'upwardly bent side members with intermediate openings and horizontal base wings projecting laterally beyond the side members in line with said openings- 3. The within described slide for spreading and contracting the side bars of a cultivator frame, said slide consisting of upper and lower members, one embracing the upper and the other the lower portion of the central bar of the cultivator frame, and means for confining said upper and lower members in such `engagin relation, said lower member consisting oi a plate having upwardly bent side members with intermediate openings, horizontal base wings projecting laterally beyond the side members in line with said openings, and upwardly projecting side wings above said openings.
