SPRING-FORMING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Nov. 24L, 1123114.
Application filed April 9, 1913. erial 3:50. 760,071
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of an embodiment of the invention in a spring forming inaehine; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the assembled leaves forming a spring as adapted to be produced by the invention herein; Fig. 8 is a fragmentary side elevation of the forming machine of Fig. 1; Fig. 1 is a plan view, with parts broken away, of one of the anti-friction forming elements; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary side elevation of the anti-friction end of the former of Fig. 4.
The forming machine may be actuated by the handle 1 mounted on the shaft 2 extending through the machine frame 3. Mounted on the shaft 2 is the crank arm d which with the link 5 forms a toggle for thrusting into holding position the second toggle comprising the links 6, 7. Adjustment of the link 5 permits regulation of the throw limit past locking position or dead center. Rigid with the frame 3 is the top bed frame 8 to which the link 6 is pivoted. Extending through the frame 8 are the guide rods 9 coacting with the brackets 10 fixed to the lower side of the movable former mounting 11 disposed to oppose the fixed former mounting 12 rigid with the frame 8. The fixed former 12 carries the fingers 13 to sustain the material to be formed, as spring leaves 14 placed on edge thereagainst and threaded on the adjustable stem or pin 15 carried by the block 16.
The fixed mounting 12 has bolt openings 17 and slots 18 therein to receive bolts 19 which may have their nuts 20 lock the plates 31 down upon the adjustable forming elements 29, disposed to converge on their after side, or away from the movable former mounting. These elements are interchangeable friction former means, which may be disposed, as permitted by the holes and slot, to determine the contour of a humped or ing.
camel back spring having extensions therefrom.
The movable former mounting 11, which is connected to be actuated by the link 7 and its toggle connections, has openings 17 and slots 23 for bolts 19, so that their nuts 20 may force plates 21 to hold the forming elements 2A, 25, 26, in adjusted positions.
in their thrust forward by throwing the handle 1., the former means 24, 525, 26, have provision for yielding action by having the stems 27 extending into recesses 28 in the opposing or extension sections29 as held spaced from the sections 24., 25, 26, by the compression springs surrounding the stems 27. The forming means or elements at the hump section of the spring have their extension sections 29 carry the anti-friction rollers 31, while the contour sections extending away from the hump have the movable forming elements 24 provided with the friction actuating faces on their extensions 32. The anti-friction actuating faces 31, in operation by direct movement toward the'stock to be formed roll it into the desired shape, and notwithstanding the force brought to bear on the hotstock, there is no twisting or strain introduced to cause trouble in the completed article. The adjustments permit resetting for the different leaves of the spring, which may be run through in series to advantage. A feature contributing mate rially to the eifectiveness'of the device, is the disposal of the forming element at the angle, element 26, somewhat in advance of the adjacent friction element 24, 82, thereby forming a departure at this point from spring contour, which departure is an insurance in rolling the leaves to form to prevent friction tearing or undesirable crowd- The disposal of the movable forming elements to converge with the fixed formers permits a mutual reinforcement of the elements in relatively stiffening each other. The advance travel of the element 26 at the angle, gives it greater compression when the machine is moved to closed or forming position to hold the hot stock sufficiently long that it may set.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A stretch eliminating spring forming machine embodying opposing yokes, driving means for effecting relative movement between the yokes to form a spring therebetween, a plurality oi? elei'nentsin the first of said yolies directed toward the othei gyohe, said elements providedyv th torniing ends outlining a spring to be i orniedi'with an abrupt bend theretoward, a pinrality oi? etements in the second yoke directed toward the first yoke and held by the second yoke creased projection into the abrupt bend, and
a yieldable mounting for the elements in the second yoke whereby they may be forced backward independently of each other in the forming action'whieh allows the spring being formed to move to shape Without stretching at the abrupt bend.
2. A spring forming machine embodying opposing yokes, driving means for efiecting relative movement of the yokes toward each other to term a spring therebetween, torming means in the first of said yokes outhnin a spring to be formed With an abrupt bon "contour; a plurality ot' forming elements in the second yoke directed toward the first yoke and held by the second yoke against movement laterally of the relative travel of the yoires toward each other, one of said elefriction roller forming end for said contour departing element, and a yieldable mounting for the contour departing elementin the second yoke whereby it may be forced back- Wardly independently of adjacent second yoke carried forming elements in the tormlng action to attain the opposing abrupt bend contour of the first yoke forming means Without gripping the spring being formed and stretching it at the abrupt bend contour, 1
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
