SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,955, dated December 12, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. SNEDIKER, of Trentonf iu the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machines for Forming the Eyes of Picks and other Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the kind of machine which comprises apuuch or punches and a die or dies composed of sections which are separable to permit of the withdrawaliof the eye after ithas been formed by the descend ing punch.
The invention consists in the combination, with .a plunger and one or more punches carried thereby, of rigid and movable die-sections, a cam or cams adapted to be rotated alternately in reverse directions to hold and release the movable die-sections, a rotary shaft for operating said plunger, and mechanism for imparting to the cam or cams a rotary motion alternately in opposite directions from the aforesaid rotary shaft, to hold and release the movable die section or sections at the proper times.

A designates the bed-frame of the machine or press, and A designates the side frames thereof. t
B designates a plunger adapted to move vertically in guides at; and G designates a shaft, mounted in bearings in the side frames, A, and adapted to be rotated by means of a countershaft, 0, carrying a pinion, b, which engages with a wheel, 0, on the shaft 0.
The counter-shaft C may be rotated by a belt passing over a pulley, d, thereon.
Upon the shaft 0 are two eccentrics, e, which operate the plunger B through rods (3; but, in lieu of eccentrics, cams or cranks may be employed.
The plungerB maycarry one ormorepunches; but in this instance two punches, ff, are employed, and the metal is subjected to them both, one of them being a finishing-punch.
Upon the bed A are two dies, each composed of two sections, D D. The sections D are secured rigidly to the bed by means of bolts 9 or otherwise; but the sections D are only secured at one end by pivots g, and are movable on said pivots toward and from the rigid sectlons.
At the free end of each movable die-section D is represented a projection, h, which slides laterally under an overhanging lip, h, and the said lip prevents the movable section from being lifted as the punch recedes.
In the bed-frame A is mounted a shaft, E,
having a gear-wheel, z, secured on its end; and p j designates a rack adapted to be reciprocated in guides It, and engaging with said wheel i. The rack j is reciprocated by an eccentric, l,o11 the shaft 0, anda rod, m, and bysiuch reciprooation the shaft E is rotated alternately in opposite directions.
On the shaft E, between the two movable die-sections D, is secured a hub or cylinder, F, having on opposite sides two cams, n, which are adapted to act upon shoulders 0 on the movable die-sections D as the shaft E is rotated, and so move the said die-sections into and hold them in proper relation to the rigid diesections D while the punches are operating on the metal held between the die-sections. As the shaft E is turned backward or in a reverse direction the cams a release the movable diesections D, and allow them to be drawn toward each other and away from their companing the movable die-sections is of course applicable whether one, two, or more punches and dies are employed in the machine, except that there should be one cam 11. for each movable die-section.
The arrangement of the cams 11. below or at the level of the bed is advantageous, because it leaves the whole space above the dies unobstructed when the plunger is raised.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.
