SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,474, dated March 13, 1 888.
' Application filed October 28, 1887.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hegewisch, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bending and Forging Machines, which is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan View of a machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2,a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a rear end elevation; Fig. 4, an elevation of the front end of the ma chine, one-half thereof being in section on the line 1 1 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5, a detail transverse sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Like letters refer to like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
My invention relates to forging-machines, and has for its object to produce a machine of this description, which shall be capable of general use for forging and bending,and which shall possess various advantages of construction and operation, as will hereinafter be more particularly pointed out.
I will now proceed to describe a construction in which I have practically carried out my invention in one fornnand will then particularly point out in the claims those features which I deem to be new and desire to protect by Letters Patent.
In the drawings, A represents the frame of the machine, which may be of any suitable construction for the purpose of supporting the various portions of the mechanism. At the front end of this frame-is arranged a forgingtable, A, which may be constructed in one piece with the said frame or secured thereto in any suitable manner. At the rear end of the frame A is arranged the main shaft B, provided with a driving-pulley, b, by means of which it is actuated from any suitable source of power, and with fly-wheels I) to impart steadiness of motion thereto.
0 represents the crankshaft mounted in suitable hearings on the frame A, provided with a crank, c, and having secured on it a gear-wheel, O, which meshes with a gear-pinion, B, on the shaft B.

end to the crank a, while its forward end is connected to a reciprocating crosshead, E. This cross-head rests upon the table A, and is provided with a downward-extending projection, E, to receive which there is formed in the table A aslot, e, the side walls of which form ways to guide the cross-head, as shown at e in Fig. 5.
E represents a plate secured to the bottom of the projection E, and extending over the ways 6, as shown in Fig. 5, to retain the cross-head in position and prevent the same from rising. To each end of the cross-head E there is attached an arm, F, which extends forward toward the front of the machine, and which is provided at its forward end with a roller, f. This arm is teuoned into the crosshead and secured by a pin, f, so as to be readily removable for the purpose of substituting arms of different shapes when desired.
The table A is provided along its side edges with a raised flange, A, and against these flanges the rollers f bear as they travel. The arms F are canrarms, their inner surfaces being provided with inclines or projections of such a configuration as will give to the'dies the desired motion of reciprocation. In the present instance I have shown these arms as each provided with an inward bend, F; but the shape, location, and number ofthese bends may obviously be varied as desired.
In conjunction with the arms F are arranged two die-carrying slides, G, capable of lateral motion in a horizontal directiontoward and from each other, being slotted, as shown at g, to permit the passage of the arms F through them. Each slide passes through a suitable guide, G, on the table A, and through a similar guide, G", formed through the flange A of the table. Vithin the slot 9 of each slide is arranged a roller, 9, which bears against the inner or cam surface ofthe corresponding arm, F, and to each slide is attached a spring, 9, which forces the said slide outward and holds the roller 9 in contact with the arm F. To the inner end of each slide is attached a die, G having a conformation suitable to adapt it to the work to be accomplished, the said die being secured to the slide in any suitable manner, and preferably in that shown, in which the die is shown provided with a shank, g
which fits in a corresponding recess in the end of the slide, being dropped into position in the same from above, and being secured by a setsorew, 9, so that the said dies may be readily removed and replaced.
H represents a mandrel arranged between the dies G and slightly in front of the same, said mandrel being secured to the table A in any suitable manner.
I represents a die secured centrally to the cross-head E and proj ecti ng forward therefrom, the said die being arranged in line with the mandrel H, and being secured to the crosshead by means of a set-screw, 2', so as to be readily removable therefrom.
The table A is preferably recessed at the front, as shown at A and at this point is provided with a depressed portion, A*, which serves not only to strengthen the table laterally, but also to enable the article operated upon to be held in a fiat position on the table by means of the tongs or other apparatus employed for this purpose.
The operation of the machineis as follows: Let it be supposed that the machine is to 0p erate upon a coupling-link, J, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The open end ofthelink, previously heated, being placed on each side of the mandrel H, the cross-head E advances and the cam portions F of the arms, bearing against the rollersg on the diecarrying slides G, cause these slides to move inward toward each other, so that the dies thereof engage the free ends of the link and coil the same around the mandrel H. The cross-head E continuing to advance, the dies G recede from each other under the action of the springs 9 and the die I, carried by the cross-head E, comes in contact with the twisted ends of the link and welds the same together against the mandrel H, in the manner shown in Fig. l of-the drawings. The link is then removed and another substituted therefor, when the operation proceeds as before. It will be seen that thelink may be held level with the table A, since the depressed portion A of the table accommodates the tongs used in holding the link. Theflange A of the. table A serves to support the arms F and prevent the same from yielding, and the springs 9' separate the laterallymoving dies as soon as their work is accomplished.
It will be understood of course that the machine is capable of general use, since the form of the dies and of the cam-arms F may be varied according to the work to be done and the movement to be imparted to the dies.
Various modifications in the details of construction may be made, however, without departing from the principle of my invention, and I therefore do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise details described and shown in the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. The combination, with the forging-table A, of the die carrying slides mounted thereon to move laterally, and the reciprocating crosshead provided with cam-arms to actuate said slides, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. In a bending and forging machine, the combination, with the forging-table and the die-carrying slides mounted thereon, of thereciprocating cross-head provided with cam-arms to operate said slides and carrying a third die, substantially as and forthe purposes specified.
3. The combination, with the forging-table A and the die-carrying slides mounted thereon and forced normally outward by suitable springs, of the crosshead E,provided with camarms F, to operate the slides, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
4. The combination, with the die-carrying 85 slides and the cam arms for operating the same, of the table provided with guiding and sup porting flanges, against which the cam-arms bear, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
5. The combination, with the slides G, having rollers g, of thecrosshead E, and thearms F, having cam-bends F, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
6. The combination, with the die carrying 95 slides G, each slotted at g, and provided with a roller, g, arranged within the slot, of the reciprocating cross head E, the cam arms F, passing through the slots 9. and provided with rollersf, and the flanges A", against which the T00 rollers f bear, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
7. The combination, with the driveshaft B, having pinion B, of the crank-shaft 0, having gear 0, to mesh therewith, the pitman D, the cross-head E, having cam-arms F, and the diev carrying slides G, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
S. In a bending and forging machine, the horizontal forgingtable provided at its front with a depressed portion, A, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
9. In a bending and forging machine, the combination, with the forging-table A, slotted at c, and provided with ways 0, of the crosshead E, having the downward projection E, and the plate E secured to the bottom thereof, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
