To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB BRAUN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Rear-End Pole-Socket; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figru'es of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to vehicle-poles, and has particular reference to rear end sockets for such poles.
The object of the invention is the provision of a metal socket of this class, which is cast in a single piece and fashioned to provide strong and highly efficient means for engaging the rear end of the pole and the circlebar of a vehicle whereby they are rigidly connected without necessitating the mortising of said parts or the bending of the pole end. v

Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the body of the socket, which is formed at its forward end with the opposing longitudinally projecting wings or arms 2, 2, between which the rear end of the vehicle pole (not shown) is intended to be secured by bolts passing through the apertures 3 in said wings or arms and alining apertures in the pole. The rear end of the socket is slotted for a desired distance, as at 4, to permit a contraction or expansion of the bifurcated parts thus formed, and each of these two parts is formed at its end with one of the circle-bar clamping-plates or members 5, thelower of which is preferably made longer than the upper, as shown. These plates are curved to conform to the curve of the circle-bar, and the latter is securely clamped therebetween at its center by bolts passing through the apertures 6 in said plates and alining apertures in the circle-bar, the bifurcated end of the socket permitting the plates to spring sufliciently to suit the thickness of the bar, thus insuring a close and perfect fit without necessitating the trimming of the bar.
The body 1 of the socket has its forward end hollowed out or socketed, as shown at 7 in Fig. 3, to receive the rear end of the vehicle-pole, whereby to assist the wings or arms 2, 2 and bolts in preventing relative lateral movement of the pole.
For the purpose of lightness in construction the body 1 is shown as being hollow throughout all or a greater portion of its length. It is apparent, however, that the same may be made solid if desired, and also that it may be made in curved or other desired form.
8 designates the doubletree-plate, which is provided with a circular opening 9 for receiving and turning on the pivot lug 10, which may be formed on either the under or upper side of the socket. The pivot-bolt of the doubletree passes through the apertures 11 in the arms or wings 2 of the socket.
Having thus described my invention what I. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. A rear-end pole socket cast in a single piece and comprising a hollow body portion forming a pole socket at its forward end and having upper and lower pole-embracing arms projecting a considerable distance from such end and having its rear end longitudinally bifurcated to form springing arms and each of said springing arms terminating in a transversely-disposed cross-piece forming upper and lower circle-bar embracing parts, substantially as described.
2. A rear-end pole-socket cast in a single piece and comprising an integral body portion having its forward end socketed and formed with upper and lower longitudinallyprojecting pole embracing arms, and its rear end longitudinally slotted to permit a springing of the bifurcated parts, said parts each carrying a circle-bar engaging plate, substantially as described.
