To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM R. TOMLIN- SON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drop-Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to improvements in board clamps located in the head of the machine and utilized to grip the board and support the hammer in raised position. As is well known, a board clamp comprises a pair of oppositely arranged members, the opposed ends of which are curved, the members being fitted with suiiicient play so that as the hammer is raised the board can slide upward between the members, but their weight and the curvature of the head ends tend to cause them to grip the board as soon as the upward motion of the hammer ceases. ()ne of these clamp members is movable and connected with a foot treadle, the operation of which causes it to be moved sufficiently to release the board and permit the hammer to drop. The other clamp member is adjustable to take up for wear of the board.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved adjustment for what may be termed the inactive clamp member.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side View of a drop press with part of the head broken away to show construction. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the inactive clamp member and Wedge. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fi 1.

16, 16, denote inwardly projecting ledges which form a slide-way, and the end of the head is apertured as at 13. The inactive clamp 15 is introduced rear end first into the front of the slide-way so that its reduced rear end 17 projects through the aperture 13 into the socket 14:.
It will thus be seen that an extremely simple construction is provided for connecting this inactive clamp member with the head, leaving it free to slide for adjustment, the adjustment being accomplished, for instance, as by the wedge 19 operating against the inclined face 18 of the socket 14.
The present invention is concerned with the construction and method of mounting the inactive clamp member in the head, the slight play of the head in the slideway permitting it to rise slightly as the board travels upward, while the ledges 16,, 16 prevent it from being tipped or thrown over backward out of operative position.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a drop hammer, a chambered head, a board clamp member mounted in one side thereof, pairs of spaced horizontal ledges projecting inwardly from the walls at the other side thereof to form a slide-way in which a second board clamp member is slidingly adjustable.
2. In a machine of the character described, a chambered head secured at the upper end thereof, oppositely arranged inwardly eX- tending ledges at the upper sides of said chambered head near one end forming a slide-way, the end wall of said chambered head being apertured, a board clamp comprising opposed cooperating members one of which is slidingly adjustable in said slideway and having a part located in said aperture, and means acting on said part for sliding said member in said slide-way.
