Description

J. W. CHENEY.- Combined Anvil and Vise.
No. 220,342. Patented Oct. 7,1879.
lam
UNITED 'STATES PATENT OFFIoE.
JAMES W. CHENEY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO JAS. B. WAYNE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED ANVIL. AND VISE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,342, dated October 7, 1879; application filed I June 9, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. CHENEY, of
' Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of struction of the anvil to form the stationary jaw of the vise and support the moving jaw, and in the peculiar means for connecting the moving jaw with the vise, and for adjusting and guiding the same, the whole forming an improved device adapted for use either as an anvil or as a vise; and, further, in providing one of the vise-jaws with a flat clamping-face and a lug projecting from the same, in combination with a supplementary jaw removably secured and pivoted upon such lug for holding articles with inclined sides, and pins placed removably between the face of the main jaw and the supplementary jaw, to keep the face of'the supplementary jaw parallel with that of the opposite jaw when desired, as fully hereinafter explained.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of my new and improved implement. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line as w in Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Arepresents ahollow anvil, provided with an interior chamber, a, with lugs b, by means of which and suitable screws the device may be secured to a bench, and with the usual horn c and hardyhole (1. Cast with the anvil, the upper face of which is preferably chilled, and forming one of the jaws of the vise, is the upward projection 0, upon which is cast or otherwise secured the lug h, to which the supplementary jaw g is removablyand pivotally secured. This lug and supplementary jaw may be secured tothe jaw i, if preferred. The supplementary jaw is straight upon its outer face and convex on its inner face, and adapted to conform itself to the straight or inclined sides of any article put into the vise. Removable pins 70 or .suitable wedges are inserted, as shown, to hold the outer face of this jaw parallel to the face of the opposite jaw for holding articles with parallel sides.
The usual adjusting-screw Z, with lever m, is sleeved and secured in the movable jaw 1', passes through the rear wall of the anvil, and engages with a nut, a, secured from turning by being inclosed within a pocketfiin the rear of the chamber a. This jaw rests upon aprojection, 0, cast with and itrrii ingan extension of the bottom of the anvillriglproper.
A guide, 19, rigidly secured to the jaw 6 near its lower end, projects through at rear wall of the anvil into the chamber a. This guide secures a correct movement of the jaw t.
The supplementary jaw may be entirely removed whenever it may ba' desired to use the vise for wider articles and' replaced for narrower articles.
What I claim as my invention to secure by Letters Patent, isp 1. The improved device consisting of the hollow anvil A, constructed with upward projection e to form one jaw of a vise, and with extension 0, the sliding jawi resting and sliding on the extension 0, and having its adjusting-screw l turning in a nut, n, inclosed in a pocket within the anvil, and provided with guide 10, also projecting into the anvil, all constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
2. The combination, with the jaw of a vise having a flat clamping-face, and a lug, h, cast therewith, of the supplementary jaw g, removably secured and pivoted upon the lug h, and the pins 7:, constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
JAMES W. CHENEY.
