Patented Nov. 14, 1905.
Application filed March 8, 1905. Serial N0. 249,011-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID HARRIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Coulter, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to wrenches of that class wherein a movable jaw is provided that slides upon a toothed shank, wherein means is provided for holding the movable jaw in its adjusted positions.
The invention has for its particular object the provision of a movable jaw of novel con struction, and has for its further object the v provision of novel means "for permitting of the rapid and easy adjustment of the movable jaw upon the shank and of novel neans for sustaining the movable aw at any position to which it may be adjusted.
In carrying my invention into ei'lect I provide the movable jaw with an extensionblock in which is mounted a sliding pin that engages with a spring-pressed plate carried by the movable jaw, which plate has a tooth on its end that engages with the teeth of a rack formed on the shank oi? the wrench.
The details of construction of my improvement are fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, andin the several views like numerals designate corresponding parts, in which- Figure 1. is a side elevation of a wrench constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same with the handle and part of the shank omitted. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the movable jaw, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an extension-block carried by the movable j aw shown in Fig. 4.
The shank 1 of the wrench carries the fixed jaw 2 on one end and the handle 3 on the other end, and the shank 1 is formed with a slot 4, that extends from below the fixed aw to near the handle, and the front edge of the shank on each side of the slot 4 is formed with teeth, so as to provide two racks 5 5, which, as will be presently described, are adapted to be engaged by a plate that is carried by the movable jaw.
wrench is formed with a stirrup 7 at its upper end and a stirrup 8 at its lower end, these stir- The movable jaw 6 of the rups embracing the shank 1 and serving to sustain the movable aw in proper position relatively to the shank. The fixed j aw is formed with a depending portion 9, and within this depending portion and adjacent to the shank a recess 10 is formed in. the jaw, the recess being of substantially wedge shape in cross-section-thatis, wider at its upper end, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. lVithin the recess 10 is arranged a metal plate 11, which has an eye 1.2 on its upper end, through which passes a pin 13, the said plate being preferably rigidly mounted on the pin and the pin being preferably rigidly mounted in the movable jaw. The lower end of the plate 11 is formed with a teeth 14, that simultaneously engages the teeth of the racks 5 5 on the shank, and in the recess 10 I arrange a flat spring 15,which is of a substantially inverted- U shape, one arm of this spring being longer than the other arm of the same and impinging against the lower end of the arm 11 just above the tooth 14, while the other and shorter arm of this spring is formed with a bent end 16, that enters a notch 17, formed. on the rear wall of the recess 10. The eXtension-block hereinbefore referred to is designated 18, and this block embraces the shank of the wrench and is engaged with the movable jaw 6 by a rabbet-joint 19. The extension-block 18 is formed with a transverse opening 21, which opening has its outer end countersunk at 22, and a pin 23, that carries a head 24, passes through the opening 21 and bears at its inner end against the inner surface of the plate 11 just above the toothed end 14 thereof. The pin 23 is formed with a slot 25, through which a pin 20 passes, said pin 20 serving to maintain the pin 23 in the opening 21 and limit the movement of said pin in both directions. A pin 26 passes through a recess 10 and passes through the loop of the spring 15 near its upper end, this pin serving to retain. the spring 15 in position against the bottom wall of the recess 10.
The parts, being constructed in the abovedescribed manner, are put together by placing the plate 11 and the spring 15 in position in the recess 10 and passing the pins 13 and 26 through the side walls of the movable it jaw and then placing the extension-block 18 in proper position relatively to the movable jaw. The movable jaw and the extensionblock are then slipped up over the shank of the wrench and the handle 3 attached in the usual manner. In this position of parts the tooth 14 of the plate 11 is held in engagement with the teeth on the shank by the resiliency of the spring 15 and also, if the plate 11 is rigidly secured at its upper end, by the resiliency of the plate itself. Normally the pin 23 is held in the projected position shown in Figs. 1. and 2 by the resiliency of the spring 15, or when it is desired to disengage the tooth 14 of the plate 11 from the racks 5 5 on the shank the pin 23 is pressed inwardly until its head sockets in the countersunk outer end of the opening 21, in which position the tooth 14 will be pushed out of engagement with the racks 5 5. When the pin has been pressed in this manner, the movable jaw can be moved along the shank in either direction, and as soon as the pressure on the pin 23 is released the toothed end 14 of the plate 11 will take into the racks 5 5 and the aw 6 will be held against movement away from the fixed jaw 2. As the teeth of the racks 5 5 slant upwardly, it will be apparent that the jaw 6 may be moved toward the jaw 2 without pressing the pin 23 inwardly, the toothed end 14 of the plate 11 during this movement of the jaw sliding over the inclined teeth of the racks 5 5.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a wrench, the combination with a slotted shank and a fixed jaw carried by said shank, of a movable jaw mounted on the shank, said movable jaw having a recess adjacent to the shank, aspring-platemounted at one end of said recess and having a tooth on its front end engaging the teeth on the shank, a U-shaped spring arranged between said plate and the inner wall of therecess in the movable jaw, an extension-block engaged with said movable jaw by a rabbet-joint, a slotted pin passing through an opening in said extension-block, and through the slot in the shank and bearing against said plate, and a second pin passing through the slot in the said firstnamed pin and through the extension-block and a third pin passing through the loop of said U-shaped spring, substantially as de scribed.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
DAVID HARRIS.
