' DRAWING PRESS.
Appneann sied rime so, 1922. semi no. 571,952.
To all, when?, it may conce/ra:
Be it known that I, @T'ro S.l3nrnn, a c1t1- zen ot' the United States, residing at No.
221 Eighth Avenue, in the borough ot" l ooklyin city and State ot New York, have invented certain new and useiiul Improvements in Drawing' Presses, of which the iollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to drawing` presses,
l0 and aims to provide improvements therein.
The present invention provides an iinproved drawing' press Ywhich is peculiarly suitable 'for making' large stam'pings, and in which the distance between i'iprights con- The invention further provides a construction wherein parts oit' thev blank-holder or die-carrying slide actuating mechanism may actY to counterweight said slide.
The invention further provides novel coinllinations and sijibcoinbinations ot parts tor effecting the functions ot a drawingpress ot the type referred to.
Two embodiments ot the invention are il lnstrated in the accompanying' drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a view in elevation, (with certain parts shown in section on one side ot the inidplane or' the gure,) showing one embodiment ot the invention.
Fig', 2 is a view in elevation of the parts at one side of the press, showing' these parts in the opposite extreme position to that shown in F ig. 1. v
Fig'. 3 is a side'view of parts shown in F ig. 2, at the leftof the line 3MB, Fig'. 2.
Figx l is a detached perspectivev view of certain ot the rock shafts and their connecting' parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig'. 5 is a view showing;- a modified arrangement of the rock shafts and their connecting parts, shown in Fig. 4.
Fig. G is a view in elevation of a second embodiment of the invention, only one-halt 45 ot the press being shown, the other hall' being' an enantiomorphie duplication ot the parts shown.
Fig. 7 is a view in side elevation of the press shown in Fig. 6, the wheel at the lett 50 ot the line 7-7 being,l omitted. l
Referring to said drawings, numeral 10 designates the 'frame of the press, comprising' the side frames or upright-s 11, 11, whi; h,
in'presses for large stampinggs, are spaced a 55 considerable distance apart. These side frames are usually narrow as compared with the distance a'cross the press between uprights.
designates a slide, which is adapted toy carry ablank-holder or die` according to the lirectimi ol action ot thepunch, and adapted to coact with a complementarv ,blanlzf holder or die, as the case may be. on the bed 2O oit' the press i Y designates a punch slide (adapted to carry apunch), and, in its preferred forni, as here shown, sliding upon the blank-holder or diecarrying slide 15, as indicated at 2G.' The punch slide 25 is conveniently actuated by a crank-shaft 28, usually through a plu-` rality ot cranks 29 and connecting rods 30. Y llfieans are provided for reciprocating' the blank-holder or die-carrying` slide l'towardv and troni the bed 20, in sucli'manner that the said Slidell? dwells during` the action ot the punch. During this dwell the tools on the slide 15" and, bed 20 engage or `grip the mar'- ginal portion of a blank which ,is` being),` shaped by the punch.
These means for recin'ocating the slide 15 comprise a plurality'o'f rocking parts 35, which are conveniently in the 'forni of rock shafts havingI toggle connections 37 to the blank-holder or die-carrying slide 15.
As shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, the rocking parts are arrangedfon an axis running trom front to rear of the press, that is, transverse of the side frames 11, and atv right angles to the axis of the crank shaft 2S. A rocking' part is preferably provided' at the front and rear of the press, at each sid@ of the press, providing four points oil? connection or support of the slide 15 to the press traine. A single rock shaft 39, yrunning' 'from front to rear of the press, conveniently forms a pair of rocking` parts at each side of the frame. Each ofthe rocking parts 35 comprises an arm 11, which, together with a link 42, form each of the toggles 37. An arm or arms 43 is also provided for transmitting motion to the rocking` parts 35. 'As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and fl, these arms 118 are conveniently -Jformed in-v tegral with the armsl, while,Y as shown in Fig'. 5the arms @t3 may be consolidated into a single arm 413 and attached to anintermediate part of the rock shaft 89. The rocking parts 35 are conveniently actuatedV by a reciprocating` slide or the likel 45,A through interinediate parts comprising a sec of a rock shaft 51 on an axis parallel to the axes of the rocking parts 35.k As shown in Fig. 4, there is one rocking part for each of the rocking parts 35, while in Fig. 5 a single rocking part 50, acting through the arm 43, acts to turn eachV of the krocking parts 35 through the rock shaft 39. For this purpose the rocking parts 50.may be connected to the rocking' partsV 35 through arms 53 and links 54, these arms and links 53 and 54 constituting toggles 55 preferably arranged soY as'to straighten simultaneously with the toggles 37. The rocking parts 50,
when' in the forni-shown in Figs. 4 and 5,l
maybe provided with a single arm 57, attached to the rock shaft 5l, receiving motion from the slide 45 through a link 58.
The reciprocatory slider45 is actuated by ai rotary part having a. cam or eccentric groove 62 therein. The slide 45 has a part 63" adapted to .fitwithinI this groove, which part 63 is Conveniently in the form of a slide block/having a broad bearing surface on the walls ofthe groove 62, as indicated at 65. p y I The rotary part 60 is conveniently in the form of a gear wheel on an end of the crank shaft 28, at each side of the press,'the gear wheels 60 being driven in any convenient manner, yas by pinions, on'. a back shaft 67, and thereby serving to transmit motion to the ends of the crank-shaft 28, as well as to the slides 48 which actuate the pairs of rocking parts 35 at each side of the press.
The slides 45V conveniently move in slideways between the side frames and the inner faces of the gear wheels 60, the cam or eccentric groove 62 4being formed onl the inner faces of said wheels 60.
TheA slide F45', and the axes of the rocking parts 35 and 50', being arranged close to the side 'frames' of the press, provide a short, compact and powerful transmission from the rotary parts 60 to the blank-holder or diecarrying slide 15. This arrangement also reliev'esthe crown 750i the press of severe strains, these being largely sustained by the side Lframes l1` and their reinforcing parts. l In the embodiment shown in Figs. 6 andl 7 the construction is similar to that shown in Figs.- l to 5, inchisive, with the exception that the rocking parts 35 are arranged to turn on axes lrunning from side to side of the press, that is, parallel to the axis of the crank shaft' 28. lnv this construction the rocking parts at front and rear of the press,
on opposite sides, `may be made in pairs in the form of a single rock shaft 8O extending from side to side of the press. These rocking parts 35 may be provided with arms 43", which are directly connected to the slide 45 by means of links 82. The construction and operation of the embodiment -shown in Figs and 7 arey otherwise the same as that of the first embodiment.
The Vinventive ideas herein set forth may receive other embodiments than those herein specifically illustra-ted and described.
