To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'I'IO S. BEYER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toggle Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in presses, especially drawing presses, and aims to provide improvements therein.
The present invention provides a novel means for driving a reciprocatory part of a press, particularly the slide carrying the blank-holder or die, and having a dwell in its movement.
The invention further provides a novel transmission for driving the main crank shaft, or the like, of a press, whereby the construction of the press and alterations of the transmission, are facilitated.
The invention further provides a construction wherein a counterweight may be provided for the slide in a part of the slideactuating mechanism.
The invention further provides novel combinations and sub-combinations hereinafter more fully set forth and defined in the claims.

Referring to said drawings, numeral 10 designates the frame of the press, which conveniently comprises the side pieces 11 and 12 connected by a yoke 13. Numeral 15 designates the bed of the press, and 16 a reciprocatory slide or part, in this instance being a blank-holder or die-carrying slide, the die or blank-holder being carried upon the slide 16, and the complementary part upon the bed 15.

have them arranged as bottom slides working upwardly. Moreover, instead of the punch slide 20 working through the slide 16, it may be arranged to work through the bed 15.
The punch slide 20 may be driven in any suitable manner. Conveniently, it is driven from the crank shaft 22, and where the said crank shaft is long, or the force to be transmitted is great, it is preferable to drive the said shaft 22 from two ends. The crank shaft 22 conveniently extends through the side pieces 11 and 12 of the frame, and has on the projecting ends one or more rotary driving parts 25, 25', which parts are conveniently large gears. The gears or driving parts 25, 25', conveniently have a driving force applied thereto through a suitable transmission 30. This transmission conveniently comprises a plurality of shafts 31,
32, 33, journaled in a bracket 35 formed as an attachment to the frame 10, and said bracket conveniently has the bearings for the said shafts 30, 31, 32, formed thereon, these hearings being preferably inline upon the face of the bracket, as indicated at 37. The shafts 31, 32, may be connected by a pair of gears 40, and the shafts 32 and 33 are preferably connected by two pair of gears 41, 41'. The shaft 33 drives the gear or gears 25, 25 through pinions 43, 43. This arrangement of the transmission shafts and gears provides a balanced drive for the gears or driving parts 25, 25', and parts which may be driven therefrom. The construction of the bracket and transmission parts also enables the transmission to be changed with the minimum alteration in the present construction, inasmuch as all changes which it is desired to make can be effected upon the bracket 35 or the parts carried thereon.
The blank-holder or die-carrying slide 16 is driven in suitable manner, and preferably so that there is a dwell of considerable duration during the working stroke of the punch.
Preferably the dri ing means for the blank-holder or die-carrying slide 16 comprise a rotar driving part or parts, which may be, an preferably are, the driving parts 25, 25 connected to the crank shaft 22. The driving parts 25, 25 are conveniently provided with eccentric parts 50, 50',
as, for example, crank pins, and these eccentric parts are preferably upon the outside face of the driving parts or gears 25, 25. The rotary driving part or parts 25, 25', conveniently actuate a rocking part or parts 60, 60', which rocking part or parts are conveniently in the form of a short rock shaft runnin across the side of the press and located eyond the periphery of the driving part or parts 25, 25'. The axis of movement of the rocking part 60 or 60 is thus at right angles to the axis of movement of the driving part 25 or 25'. Each of the rock- shafts 60, 60 conveniently has an arm 62 connected thereto, and the arm 62 is conveniently connected to the eccen' tric art 50 or 50' by a link 65 or 65, each link ing connected to the arm 62 through a universal joint 67, and each link being also connected to the eccentric part 50 or 50' through a universal joint or connection 68.
The driving means for the blank-holder or die-carrying1 slide 16 also preferably com prises a secon rocking part or parts or 70, and these rocking parts 70, 70 conveniently turn on an axis running across the side or sides of the frame of the press, and thus being atright angles to the axis of the crank shaft 22.
The rocking parts 60 or 60 and 70, 70' are conveniently connected to arms 77, 78, or other equivalent parts, connected to or forming part of, respectively, the rocking parts 60 or 60' and 70, 70'.
The slide 16 is preferably connected to the rocking parts 70, 70' by toggles 80, 80 and each toggle is conveniently constituted by an arm 81 on the rocking part 7 0 or 7 0', and a link 82 connected at one end to the arm 81, and at its other end to the slide 16. The to gles 80 and 80' are referably duplicat at the front and bac sides of the slide (as shown in Fig. 2), and the distance between the said toggles 80 80, or 80, 80 being short, the rockin part 70 or 70 may conveniently be a me shaft 84 passing through the frame, and having the arms 78 and 81 fixed thereon. Where the rocking part or parts 70 have an embodiment which comprises a rock shaft, as above described, and where the torsion is negligible, motion may be transmitted to t e rock shaft through a single link 7 5 or connected to the rockin part 60 or 60'. Where the rocking parts 0 or 70 have a different embodiment, or where the torsional bending of a rock shaft, if used, would be objectionable, it would be necessary or desirable to duplicate the link 75 or 75' to drive the rocking parts 70 70 separately.
e present invention provides a relatively simple and effective means of drivin a reciprocatory slide in a press, inasmuc as the motion may be taken from the outer face of the driving part or parts 25, 25 (which parts may also constitute driving parts for the crank shaft) and be transmitted around or across the periphery of the said drivin parts, and enables the rocking parts 70, 0' to be located upon the frame adjacent the crank shaft, so that no unnecessary height or length of frame is necessary to provide the necessary space between the blank-holder slide and the bed of the press. Moreover, the driving connections for the blank-holder slide 16, on one side of the press, comprising the parts 25, 65, 60, 75, 70 and are independent of the corresponding driving parts 25', 65', 60', 7 5, 70' and 80' on the opposite side of the press, thus leaving the crown in the mid dle zone of the press free of Working parts belonging to the blank-holder slide operating connections and providing a neutral zone which may be widened without aflecting said blank-holder slide operating connections.
Moreover, by making the links 65, 65' as hea parts, these parts serve to counterweig t the slide 16, inasmuch as it will be observed that in the working of the press the parts 65 and 16 move in opposite direc tions.
The dwell is provided by arranging the slide-reciprocating mechanism in such manner that the eccentric parts 50, 50' each passes through the parts of its rotary movement in the vicinity of 270 during the time that the toggle or toggles 80, 80' are extended.
It is obvious that the invention is not limited to the embodiment herein specifically illustrated and described, but that the inventive ideas may receive other embodiments and mechanical expressions,
What is claimed is 1. A press comprisin a frame a blankholder or die carrying-s ide, and means for reciprocating the same, said means comprising a rotary part, a rocking part at a lower part of said frame turning on an axis at right angles to the axis of rotation of said rotary part, a driving connection between said rocking part and said slide and a driving connection between said rotary part and said rocking part, said driving connection between said rocking part and said slide comprising a second rocking part, a toggle having its ends connected to said last-named rocking part and said slide, and a link connecting said rocking parts.
2. A press comprising a blank-holder or die-carrying slide, and means for reciprocating the same, said means comprising a rotary shaft having a wheel thereon, a rocking part below the periphery of said wheel having an axis crossing the axis of said shaft, and a driving connection between said rotary shaft and rocking part having a universal joint therein, said slide being on the side of said wheel opposite said driving connection.
3. A press comprising a side frame, a blank-holder or die-carrying slide, and means for reciprocating the same, said means comprising a rotary shaft having a wheel thereon, said slide being on one side of said wheel, and driving connections between said shaft and slide around the periphery of said wheel, said driving connections comprising a pair of rocking parts, one of which is on said side frame below said wheel, both of which have axes crossing that of said rotary shaft, and a connecting rod having a universal connection to one of said rocking parts and to said rotary shaft.
4. A press comprising a side frame, a blank-holder or die-carrying slide, and means for reciprocating the same, said means comprising a rotary shaft having a wheel thereon, said slide being on one side of said wheel, and driving connections between said shaft and slide around the periphery of said wheel, said driving connections comprising a pair of rocking parts, one of which is on said side frame elow said wheel, both of which have axes crossing that of said rotary shaft, and a connecting rod having a universal connection to one of said rocking parts and to said rotary shaft, and a toggle between said slide and one of said rocking parts.
5. A press comprising a side frame, a blank-holder or diecarrying slide, and means for reciprocating the same, said means comprising a rotary shaft having a wheel thereon, said slide being on one side of said wheel, and driving connections between said shaft and slide around the periphery of said wheel, said driving connections comprising a rocking part on said side frame below said wheel, having an axis crossing that of said rotary shaft, and a connecting rod having a universal connection to said arm.

A drawing press comprising a blankholder slide, a frame comprising relatively narrow side frames spaced a considerable distance apart, a drive-shaft having wheels thereon at each end, a rock-shaft at each side of the press, each turning on an axis transverse ofsaid side frames, connections between said slide and said rock-shafts, and independent means at each side of the press for driv ing each of said rock-shafts at one point only comprising a second rock-shaft associated with each of said first-named rock-shafts beyond the periphery of said wheels, and direct connections between said drive-shaft and each of said second rock-shafts, said independent connections leaving a neutral zone in the middle of the press.

A drawing press comprising a blankholder slide, a frame comprising relatively narrow side frames spaced a considerable distance apart, a drive-shaft having wheels thereon at each end, a. rock-shaft at each side of the ress each turning on an axis transverse 0 said side frames, and independent means at each side of the press for driving each of said rock-shafts at one point only comprising a second rock-shaft associated with each of said first-named rock shafts beyond the periphery of said wheels, and direct connections between said drive shaft and each of said second rock-shafts, said first-named rock-shafts having toggle connection with said blank-holder slide at opposite sides thereof, said independent connections leaving a neutral zone in the middle of the press.
8. A drawing press comprising a frame having upright side frames spaced widely apart, a blank-holder slide movable in said frame, a punch slide, a crank-shaft extending across between said side frames and connected to drive said punch slide, wheels on the ends of said shaft, rocking parts turning on axes transverse to said frame and said crank-shaft, connections from said rocking parts to the blank-holder slide, and independent driving connections from the outer sides of said wheels arounds their peripheries to said rocking parts, said independent connections leaving a neutral zone in the middle of the press.
9. A drawing press comprising a frame having upright side frames spaced widely apart, a blank-holder slide movable in said frame, a punch slide, a crank-shaft extending across between said side frames and connected to drive said punch slide, wheels on the ends of said shaft, rocking parts turning on axes transverse to said frame and said crank shaft, connections from said rocking parts to the blank-holder slide, and independent driving connections from the outer sides of said wheels around their peripheries to said rocking parts, such connections including a pair of second rocking parts turning on axes transverse to the frame and crank-shaft, said independent connections leaving a neutral zone in the middle of the press.
10. A drawing press comprisin a pair of upright side frames, :1 blank-hol 'er or diecarrying slide between said uprights, and means for reciprocating the same, said means comprising rocking parts at each side of said slide, toggles connecting said slide and rocking parts, a rotary shaft running through said side frames and having wheels thereon at each end outside of said side frames, and an independent driving connection at each side of the press around said wheels from said shaft to said rocking parts, comprising a second rocking part and a connecting rod havin universal joints at its ends, said indepen ent connections leavdie-carrying slide between said uprights,
and means for reciprocating the same, said means comprising rocking parts at each side of said slide, toggles connecting said slide and rocking parts, a rotary shaft running through said side frames and having wheels thereon at each end outside of said side frames, and a driving connection at each side of the press around said wheels from said shaft to said rocking parts, comprising a second rocking part and, a connecting rod having universal joints at its ends, the second rocking part at each side of the press being upon said side frame below said wheel and connected to one of the universal joints of its respective connecting rod.
12. A drawing press comprising a pair of upright side frames, a blank-holder or diecarrying slide between said uprights, and means for reciprocating the same, said means comprising rocking parts at each side of said slide, toggles connecting said slide and rocking parts, a rotary shaft running through said side frames and having wheels thereon at each end outside of said side frames, and a driving connection at each side of the press around said wheels from said shaft to said rocking parts, comprising a second rocking part and a connecting rod havin universal joints at its ends, said rotar shaft having cranks thereon, a punchsli e, and pitmen-rods connecting said cranks and punch-slide.
13. A drawing press comprising a pair of upright side frames, a blank-holder or diecarrying slide between said uprights, and means for reciprocating the same, said means comprising rocking parts at each side of said slide, toggles connecting said slide and rocking parts, a rotary shaft running through said side frames and having wheels thereon at each end outside of said side frames, and an independent driving connection at each side of the press around said wheels from said shaft to said rocking parts, comprising a second rocking part and a connecting rod having universal joints at its ends, said rotary shaft being at the upper part of said side frames, said independent connections leaving a neutral zone in the middle of the press.
14. A drawing press comprisin a pair of upright side frames, a blank-hol er or diecarrying slide between said uprights, and means for reciprocating the same, said means comprising rocking parts at each side of said slide, toggles connecting said slide and rocking parts, a rotary shaft running through said side frames and havin wheels thereon at each and outside of said side frames, and a driving connection at each side of the press around said wheels from said shaft to said rocking parts, comprising a second rockin part and a connecting rod having universe joints at its ends, the second rocking part at each side of the ress being upon said side frame below said wheel, and connected to one of the universal joints of its respective connecting rod, said rotar shaft having cranks thereon, a punch-slide, and pitmen-rods connecting said cranks and punchslide, said rotary shaft being at the upper part of said side frames.

A drawing press comprising a bed and a slide, one of which is adapted to carry a die and the other a blank holder for coacting with said die, and means for reciprocating said slide with a dwell at the extreme of its movement nearest said bed, said means comprising rotary wheels at each side of the press, and connections at each side of the press, independent of the connections at the other side, between each of said wheels and the adjacent side of said slide, said connections each comprising a. rocking part turning on an axis at right angles to the axis of rotation of said rotary wheel, connections between said rocking part and slide, and driving connections between said wheel and rocking part comprising a second rocking part also turning on an axis at right angles to the axis of said wheel, a crank on said wheel, and a universally jointed rod connected to said crank and to said second rocking part, said independent connections leaving a neutral zone in the middle of the ress.
16. A drawing press comprising a, bed and a slide, one of which is adapted to carry a die and the other a. blank holder for coacting with said die, and means for reciproeating said slide with a dwell at the extreme of its movement nearest said bed, said means comprising rotary wheels at each side of the press, and connections at each side of the press, independent of the connections at the other side, between each' of said wheels and the adjacent side of said slide, said connections each comprising a short rock-shaft turning on an axis at right angles to the axis of rotation of said rotary wheel, and driven at one point onl a. pair of connections between said rock-s aft and slide, and driving connections between said wheel and rock shaft, said independent connections leaving a neutral zone in the middle of the press.
17. A twin-driven double action drawing press comprising a frame having upright side-frames spaced widel 8, art, and a crown, a punch slide, an a, lank-holder slide, a crank shaft driving, the punch slide, having gears on its opposite ends with cranks on their outer sides, and inde endent devices at opposite sides for actuating the blank-holder slide, comprising toggles engaging its opposite ends adjacent the side frames rocking parts receiving the thrusts of said toggles, arranged horitontally on axes from front to rear, and reacting against said frame, connectin rods driven from said cranks respective and rockers and links communicating from said rods around the gears to the respective rocking parts, and related to impart to the blank-holder slide the customary down-stroke, long dwell, and up-stroke to each turn of the crank-shaft, said independent actuating devices leaving a neutraLzone in the middle of the press.
18. A drawing press, comprising a bed and a slide, one of which is ada ted to carry a die, and the other a blank-1101 er for coacting with said die, and means for reciprocatingsaid slide with a dwell at the extreme of its movement nearest said bed, said means comprising rotary wheels at each side of the press, and connections at each side of the press independent of the connections at the other side, between each of said wheels and the adjacent side of said slide, said connections each comprising a rocking part turning on an axis at right angles to the axis of rotation of said rotary wheel, connections between said rocking part and slide, and driving connections between said rocking part and wheel comprising a second rocking part, and a universally jointed rod in the part of the connection oining two parts turning on axes at right angles to one another, said independent actuating devices leaving a neutral zone in the middle of the press.
19. A drawing press, comprising a bed and a slide, one of which is adapted to carry a die and the other a blank-holder for coacting with said die, and means for reciprocating said slide with a dwell at the extreme of its movement nearest said bed, said means comprising rotary wheels at each side of the press, and connections at each side of the press, independent of the connections at the other side, between each of said wheels and the adjacent side of said slide, said connections each comprising a rocking part turning on an axis at right angles to the axis of rotation of said rotary wheel, connections between said rocking part and slide, and driving connections between said rocking part and wheel comprising a second rocking part beyond the periphery of said wheel, a crank on the outside of said wheel, and a universally jointed rod on the outside of said wheel, connecting said crank and said second rocking art, whereby to transmit motion around t e periphery of said wheel, said independent actuating devices leaving a neutral zone in the middle of the press.
